Don't you hate when people say don't be sad, don't be anxious or calm down. I f*****g hate it. Do they really think they're helping?

Don't be angry. They're just trying to help.

You're starting to sound like my father..

I appreciate the intentions but to me such statements make all sorts of questions pop up in my mind.

Maybe it's just paranoia. There's lots of ways to go about it.

It bothers me sometimes, depending on what mood I'm in. I've definitely had "Don't tell me how I'm supposed to feel!!" go through my head many times,

Truly - they usually are just trying to help or are trying to be kind. Don't be angry at them - some day you may come to appreciate it.

I would have to agree with Egghead Jr and Humanaut on this.

I don't believe most people have the worst of intentions. What do you think are their intentions?

I think its when people are just trying to show concern. That's how I see it from my own experience.

Yeah I do dislike that, chances are if i don't already feel at all like they are saying I do, then chances I will after they say that. Or like if I start getting a little aggravated and someone says to calm down, when I am already trying to keep calm.

I hate hearing the ol' "calm down" :x

Just hearing it is enough to make me more pisseder than I was already!

I've heard "calm down" when I was only mildly upset about whatever it was and wondered how they'd react when I was truly in a bad meltdown

My sister and I were told not to be ninnies when we were little. I was told not to be a sour puss once when I was 9. I was told not to be immature when I was 16.

"Calm down" is the one I hate!! I'm RARELY up-in-the-air, when they say this; I just get hyper, sometimes, and / or, have pressured speech; and, when they say this, it ticks me off. My experience has NOT been people saying it, in a seemingly caring way----the way they've intoned it, usually, is: "What's wrong with you?"----and I've even felt, in my younger days, like I'd like to PUNCH 'em!!

Ironically, when I'm REALLY upset, I get very quiet!

That's what I'm like with anxiety. When I'm slightly anxious I act very anxious. People often ask me if I'm okay and tell me to calm down. When I'm having an anxiety attack I usually sit still and have a neutral expression. People usually leave me alone when I'm really suffering.
