I would just like to find out who has applied or is a member of MENSA. I've been taking some preliminary IQ tests, and I'd like to find out if there's anyone else who has Asperger's.

Also, I'd like to find out if you DO have a high IQ but are NOT a member, and why.

Of course, if this is too personal, then don't reply.

Thanks,

Jennifer

I don't know if my IQ overall is high enough, I tested all over the charts, to mildly MR to superior, but even if my IQ WAS high enough, I wouldn't join MENSA. It seems to be more of a vanity thing than anything else, and besides, it costs money, which I never seem to have.

Im 2 points shy of mensa. Not sure why-I am stupid as hell.

For some reason I read this and thought you were asking about Trio.
Which is a multicultural, low income, or victim of violence educational opportunity equalizer in some colleges-which I was a part of.

I took the home test and had it marked and came back at 155 IQ and it was suggested I go on to take the supervised test. I never bothered as I was nervous about having to do it among other people, there was nowhere local enough and I do not see much point in paying just to say 'Look, I belong to MENSA, aren't I clever!'. From what I hear, it isn't much to write home about.

Thats the kind of false status symbol NT's love. Now if you want to be a member of a
group devoted to real achievement thats cool. But comparing Mensa to real achievement would be like allowing any tall black man to compare his basketball
playing skills with an NBA professional and say he is at the same level.

I think the word pretentious comes to mind.
I never want to be percieved that way.So not me.
So, in saying that, I would not join because there is no point.
I know what I am, so what else is needed?
A pat on the back? Surrounded by a bunch of " aren't we soooo clever people"?
Slit my throat now, please.
I find that I have the most absloute and utter contempt for people like that.
I find I kind of take it personal and fee the need to defend those who are being verbally beaten up. I just use Aspie truth on them. I believe its called brutal honesty.(Considering I never even think about the impact it will have)

I guess I don't completely know what Mensa is....except that you've got to have a high IQ to get in..... 8)

Maybe if I lived in a larger city where I could go and pow wow with other Mensa members about important topics...get different perspectives on problems, etc. But I think there may only be one or two within 50 miles of me....I don't know. Is that a "pow wow", or would that just be considered "coffee" between colleagues?

If I DO qualify for Mensa, and end up joining...it WOULDN'T be for the t-shirt they give you at orientation that says, "I'm Smarter Than You" :shameonyou: ...it would be for learning things from people who have similar thought processes, intelligence levels, etc. AND...I'm at the low end of the IQ qualifying scale anyway....so I could learn a LOT from people that I might not normally meet on a day to day basis.

(As for the snobbiness attached to Mensa...yes, I have heard of that. I went on Match.com and there were actually guys who talked [in length] about Mensa and how they WISH they could find someone as smart as they were :nerdy: ....blecch!)

I wonder how many Asperger people they have as members...since none of us really like to join groups....

Jennifer

Yeah, I thought about joining, but only to meet like minded people, which doesn't seem likely. To tell the truth I'm kind of scared of getting my IQ measured.

I was a member for a couple of years, when I was first starting out in software and needed something to put on my resume. I mistakenly thought that a MENSA credential might impress potential hiring managers. I actually qualified for MENSA based on my SAT scores. I never took their standard test. My SAT scores are from the 80s. My understanding is that they don't accept SAT scores anymore, because the believe that the SAT has now been transformed into less of an aptitude test and more of an acheivement test (or something like that).

I never went to any social functions and I only read the newsletter a few times. Not my cup of tea.

I let the membership expire, but I kept the mug and t-shirt.

I'm NT, btw. When younger, I definitely thought that I was "special", and that a MENSA credential was evidence of that. I outgrew that, thankfully.

I used to be a member. I joined because I wanted to meet kindred spirits but I never found out if they are because I didn't go to anything. Then, when I was applying for a job, the counsellor told me to ditch Mensa from my CV. So I didn't renew the membership.

I used to be a member several years ago. I joined because I thought it would be a good place to learn things, do courses and stuff, but I found out it's just a social club, and nobody needs a high IQ to socialize. I certainly didn't need that, so I left.

I wouldn't join if I even could. I don't know if my IQ qualifies but I think IQ is just arbitraty and subjective and shouldn't count for anything anyway. The only good thing about Mensa is that they make fun puzzle books.

I have heard that MENSA members are stuck up.

I toyed with the thought of joining/applying to MENSA just for the heck of it. Not that anyone would take me any more seriously, of course. My IQ scores have ranged from 127 to 135, depending on the test but that doesn't mean anything if I can't get by in the world.

Identical experience - even down to the score, roughly (159 rings a bell, but I'm probably making that up :) ).

I find that with most "intelligence" tests, I spend far too much time justifying to myself that every one of the multiple choice alternatives has equal validity. (My, what a torturous sentence!).

Just recently I took a little test with mathematical series in it. Amazing what some people think is a sensible test question. One of them was the decimal expansion of gamma, or some such. If I want to know that, I look it up (or write a program to calculate it). I gave up bothering to remember more than the odd digit or so of such things (3.141926/7) as soon as I could calculate them. (I always like the six sixes that crop up after a couple of thousand places. Whoops - not sixes, you don't get them until 252,499. It's nines, and starts at only 762).
