I have a very poor memory of my childhood, I am finding, until something triggers off random memories...for example, I was looking up games on ebay, when I suddenly remembered the family's first computer...a spectrum zx...and soon after, I remembered how I would take this machine into the small living room(this would be about 1988) and play games all day at the weekend. I loved rainbow something or other...damn, you see, the name of that game came back to me but I forgot it again! I loved the rocky horror picture show game and harrier attack... And then I remembered when I was a little older, we got a compaq multi media computer and I would spend hours looking up all kinds of information on Encarta.

Other things are bought back to me by my mother... like walking through a plate glass window when I was about 2, then trying to walk back through the broken glass...as if I didn't see it.
And an incident when I was taken to a children's stage show and the guy on stage wanted some young volunteers. I didn't get picked so threw a major tantrum that resulted in him changing his mind. He asked how old I was, and I said 'I'm very little'.

I remember swinging on the swing for hours at a time looking at the sky, and a liking for dark, musty places, like the air raid shelter in our garden.

Yet when I actively try and remember how I was at a specific age... it does not happen. They come back only when triggered or just at random moments.

How is everyone else's memory recall, and do you ever get random memories come back to you that make you thin, 'That was very aspie of me'?

Encarta 98 is how I learned about Adolf Hitler in First Grade.

I remember when I was young, my dad was drunk and he told me that Hitler had only one testicle.

My memory is like that too... I don't remember things until something triggers it and then once I start remembering stuff I remember more and more things until they fade off again.

I had a rough time growing up- and one day my son put a cup in the middle of my plate (sideways so it spilt all over my food) and I remembered that my Dad did the same thing to me one year at Christmas dinner. Then I remembered every single event around that dinner- who came, what was served,... everything. But now- I remember the similarity in my son and Dad's actions but I don't remember all of the circumstances around the incidents anymore.

It has been claimed that both Hitler and Napoleon were afflicted by such a lack of symmetry, and suggested that this may have played a role in their particular psychological makeup.

I don't know how many people know it, but a mass forms above the kidneys. In girls they stay where they are and become ovaries. In boys the cord becomes longer and they descend into the scrotum as testicles. That last step doesn't always happen, or happens incompletely. So he might have had one testicle, but that wouldn't be what made him so crazy, etc.... BTW reference.com says it happens in 3-4% of live births!

http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Monorchism

My memory is triggered by LOTS of things! Things that Graelwyn and starbuline mentioned brought back memories of picnics, birthday parties, and gifts. The only aspie thing about those memories was that I understood things better, spoke better, could read, and had indexed all my books. I also made a little paper airplane and wrote a swastika on it, and couldn't understand why my mother was so up in arms over a common airplane decal. So it is odd how I was probably smart and stupid at the same time.

But HEY, I can just look to even yesterday to see evidence of being an aspie.

Steve

Hitler ,, only had one ball
The other
was stuck on the wall..

..Haven't any of you sung that ryme when you were younger?

..He was also a try hard Painter,, and the Joke is that when you say that Hitler was a Painter - you make out as though the only think he ever painted was plaster (Domestic painting).

..When infact he was realy a fruit loop artist, inwhich When in Austria no-one baught his art -that's why he had to start painting houses for a living. :)

-and the other joke:
It was the fumes that made him gather all those crack pot theories. -then he finally cracked and joined the Peoples socialist party.... where he no longer had to climb ladders , but subconsciensly couldn't help himself and made it to the ceiling.

We got an Amiga 500 when I was about 16, then a Compaq (aaah, Encarta) :)

I have quite vivid sensory memories of many things that my parents never told me about or that they never knew about until I told them, but I know what you mean about suddenly remembering huge chunks when something triggers it.

I also used to and still do get these bouts of nostalgia where I'd suddenly remember an item or toy or a romper suit (my favourite was orange with a green smiling locomotive on it - strangely enough I don't like Thomas the Tank Engine though - he frightens me, he looks vicious!) or my baby bottle, and often I would not be happy until I had that item dug up from the cellar. I started drinking tea and milk from a baby bottle again long after starting school, for example.

I have poor memory in general for many things but others are vivid and stuck in my brain for years, even dreams I had when I was under 4 years old. Most memories are only photos in my mind...no other senses, just visual.I can even see my self crying but it seems like it was happening to another person(my psych used to say I was emotionaly detached and intellectualizing because I did not appear emotional when recalling past traumas but it was like recounting a book I had read....I didnt feel it.)

Someone will say something like....tops....and I will see myself playing with those plastic tops that you spin against the floor...I do love the sound of those and liked watching them spin.I hear a word and it's like my brain does a "gooogle" and brings up a picture. When I try and remember....I just get a few random photos, like looking through an old photo album.I am amazed at the concept that "I" used to be that little person...just such an odd concept, cant seem to get my head around it.
