I’ve always had issues with uncontrollable laughter, but usually, as a child, it would only be during a meltdown. Now, as I’ve gotten older, it can inappropriately be a replacement for sadness, often occuring at VERY bad times (e.g. funerals or church)

I think it is because when I feel upset and am trying to avoid a crying spell or a meltdown, shutdown, etc, I tend to tell jokes to myself in my head to feel better, but end up laughing out loud and looking crazy?

Overall, do you guys think this is an Aspie thing? Or could it be caused by my cerebullar ectopia/migraines?

When someone bad happens, I get a strange feeling. It's not necessarily good or bad, but it's uncomfortable. I think my laughter is an attempt to relieve the tension the situation causes.

I read that post and took the EQ quiz that you got a 14 on. I got an 8!! I feel horrible about that lol. Just out of curiosity, RETICENTJAEGER do you find yourself desensitized to pain? With the exception of headaches and pain that comes as a shock, most other people’s “10” is less than a “1” for me. I once fell down a flight of unfinished stairs with nails sticking out, got all banged up, didn’t cry, and continued on with what I was saying w.o interruption.

I'm not sure whether I'm overly sensitive to pain, or the other way around. Sometimes I have trouble pinpointing where the pain is, and I don't always realized it when I'm hungry...But I think I might be overly sensitive, actually.

I don't know if it's a spectrum thing but that's extremely familiar to me, though I am good at funerals. I have more issues in church or in classes.

I don't have uncontrollable laughter. In fact, I can't remember the last time I laughed.

I do talk to myself when I'm home alone and sometimes I'll come up with some really witty stuff and I'll laugh.

What I do have is uncontrollable smiling at inappropriate times like when someone is giving me bad news like someone died, I have to use all of my power to dial the smile right back. I'm not good at it though. I think people understand but then again, I usually have no clue what they're really thinking. Hmph.

I laugh, sometimes uproariously, at random thoughts in public. I'm rarely with another person when I do this. People look at me curiously. I don't give a flying rat's butt what they think!

It doesn't occur often, but I have responded with laughter at inappropriate moments. If I'm really uncomfortable and don't know how to respond, I can't always squash the impulse to laugh.

It takes me a long time to process jokes. I will sometimes laugh at the wrong time when I've finally processed a joke from a week ago or longer.

LOL - a flying rat's butt! :)

But I agree with you. I think it's a thing that comes with age. The older you get, the more you realize we're all just as clueless as each other about what life is about and you start to worry less about what others think of you. I believe the word is maturity although I don't feel I've fully mastered it yet. But I don't care what others think of me.

Usually only when I find something I said to myself to be funny. It's sometimes awkward when it happens in public. It was an inside joke inside my head. When I was younger I used to laugh at jokes that were directed at me, an incredibly vain attempt to fit in. There was one time a few months ago when something fell through that I broke out laughing hysterically, I had reach my emotional bottom there was no further low. I thought to myself of course that happened, what did you expect, what can go wrong will go wrong for no reason.

Interesting story though, this Halloween I exited the comfort zone and worked with the Haunted Forest in my town. I must have been pretty unsettling to the others that worked there with my dead silence and death stare. But while working I perfected the most unsettling laugh I've heard. My month thus far had been a lot of turmoil and I was on edge so it kind of let out a lot of pressure that had built up. It sounded kind of like the joker and I lost control of my motor functions while doing it and end up ragdolled on the ground. People were completely terrified of it.

Well, I don't know what's causing it. I'm started on Amatriptlyne now and I don't know how it's going yet.

GirlwithAsperger's: Are you good at mimicry? At imitating various accents?

I know you know at least two languages with a great degree of fluency. I suspect you know a few more, too.

I think you're very bright. I wish there was a way somebody could make you feel better.
