I feel and look like an ugly weirdo and a freak, just had my long hair thinned out and layered but the the back looks like too much as been cut off and looks short and the sides of my head and top and fringe are still quite long covering my ears because having ears exposed makes them look big. Its made me feel disappointed and in a very unhappy and depressive mood and looking in the mirror it looks ridiculous and I now feel like I don't want to go out looking like this. I've been to hair salons twice this week which may explain why it looks shorter because more layers have been cut.

Maybe we can see a pic, you can always cover your face if you're worried.

I understand this VERY much. Go back to where you had it done and ask to speak to the manager. Have a more experienced stylist fix it as best as he/she can. You should also be reimbursed.

I chopped some of my own off in the bathroom a few weeks ago b/c it was too long in the front and I couldn't stand it any longer. Plus I'm really poor, so can't afford to go to a stylist. But the result now is it looks like s**t and I have to wait for it to grow back. Till I get disability, which might take another year or two, I still won't be able to afford to get it done professionally which obviously sucks. Having some grey hair now isn't fun either.

Sorry to hear that. It has been a year since I've had mine cut. I may just see how long it gets :D

In some larger towns and cities, there are usually schools that people are attending to learn to cut hair. It's not ideal but better than cutting your own and I think it will be free or very inexpensive. Maybe worth looking into?

This is a link talking about Aveda salons but the tips would help at any school I think.

The next time I get my hair cut I'm going to take a picture of The Kinks to the barber, point at the drummer and say to them, "I want you to cut my hair like this." I look like a marine.

I dyed mine two weeks ago, the same colour, yet it still surprises me when I look in the mirror. I find I've just got used to the change when it's time to get done again.

What do other people say about your hair?

On the bright side, it will grow back. In future though, in order to have the best experience at the barber's/hair salon, you want to be extremely specific about what you want. "A bit of a trim" is too subjective to guarantee getting the cut you want.

The best thing you can do is have a picture of the exact style you want for the stylist to reference, and if you don't have that, at least know the exact length you want your hair to be at each section in inches/centimetres/millimetres, or know exactly how much length you want the stylist to cut off. When you get a haircut that you like, take a picture to show the stylist for the next time

Also, hair grows approximately 0.5 inches per month, so say you get a cut you like and you go back three months later wanting the same cut, you'd ask for the stylist to take 1.5 inches off.

I've had to totally shave my hair twice because I gave myself bad haircuts LOL

Have faith. Your hair will grow out of the "bad" haircut in a couple of weeks.
