I've seen quite a few posts about people with AS being nerdy. How common is this? I'm thinking that I may be on the spectrum, but I've never been considered a nerd. I'm more of a muscle-y vocational type, and most of my "special talants" revolve around cars....designing and building engines, rebuilding transmissions and axles, body work, and custom metal farication.

We have to define nerd first. We all think we know what it means but with out some formal definition this discussion want amount to much. So we will have people saying yes and no in this thread with no facts to back up their theories.

I'm actually not a nerd. I have high intelligence, but I like watching football and I play on my college's basketball team. I don't mind working out either.

Define what you mean by nerd.

I am a classic nerd, no dragon-shirts or D&D for me! I dress in semi-casual attire.

Not a clue, nor do I care. I find such definitions as 'nerd' pointless. It is interesting though that I didn't get a meaning come to mind when I saw the word, but a guy with black, round rimmed glasses, buck teeth, a train timetable and a check jacket lol. Is this the whole seeing in pictures thing happening?

Many people who are on here are probably nerdy/have geeky tendencies, but this is an internet forum and many people here spend a lot of time online/on the computer for all sorts of reasons, so this is not the best example.

The two Aspie guys I've met IRL and known of their AS aren't nerdy. One of them was particularly well dressed (casual short-sleeved shirt, baggy pants...very stylish) and VERY well built...typical Kiwi. The other is my boyfriend...he's always in shorts and t-shirt, so his dress style is childish but not nerdy. Both of them didn't have the typical nerdy facial structure either (don't ask...lol...I've always found 'nerds' so to speak to have a typical look about them), my guy in particular could be a model I reckon... ;D

But he's also very into cars, has a job at a workshop, constantly lifting stuff and tinkering. He's my boyracer :)

The AS girl I know...yeah, she'd fit into that category though. Long hair, straight-cut fringe. No concept of modern styles of dress whatsoever. All she lacks is the glasses...lucky woman has perfect vision :?

That could also be construed as geek. Although the movie is called "Revenge of the Nerds"...

Nerd and Geek are reasonably synonymous, no need to get picky :P

Yeah there is a stereotypically way nerds dress. So looks is how we are defining nerd? I want a definition based on mental aspects. I'm assuming most people think
cool is the opposite of nerd?

I prefer the word 'geek'. Partly because I think it sounds better.

I am by no means a nerd. Actually at my school, I'm considered 100% prep. Although I don't think I'm that much of a prep, it's better than the other categories my school has. Here's my school's breakdown:

85% Prep and/or Jock
5% Goth
5% Ghetto
3% Getto Wanna-Be
2% Red Neck

Is there really a mental state for 'nerd' or 'geek'? :? Stupidly shy of women, no confidence, obsessive interests, somewhat antisocial, often don't blend in at all with the 'preps'...

:?

To be a nerd though, you sort of have to have the look too.

Ah heck. FFS PEOPLE. If you want to see what 'nerd' is...watch Weird Al's 'White and Nerdy' video clip already!

On Match.com dating site they used/use the term "Brainiac"

brain·i·ac (brn-k)
n. Slang
A highly intelligent person

The sad thing is very few women were looking for a brainiac infact most listed it as a turn off.
