I love names. Since I was a kid I've always been fascinated by them. My mom had a book full of baby names (that she used to find my name, actually) and I would browse through it just for fun. I have almost a sixth sense for correct pronunciation. I like trying to say an unusual name, and I enjoy the other person's surprise when I get it right. When I'm coming up with characters for my writing, one of my favorite things is deciding what to name them.

I especially like first and last names that sound good together. Conversely, I can become irritated by names that don't "sound right." This lesson has never been lost on celebrities or other popular figures, who often change their names to be simpler and more appealing. We probably wouldn't remember George Herman Ruth the same way if he'd never had the nickname "Babe". Milton Supman called himself Soupy Sales. Charo's real name is María del Rosario Mercedes Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza; doesn't quite roll off the tongue the same way, does it? But some are fortunate enough to be born with awesome names, such as Halle Berry and Wesley Snipes. :)

My favorite names tend to be biblical (like Matthew, Mary, Samuel, Christine), European (Alphonse, Sheila, Roland, Blanche), or modern but in good taste (Zoe, Cameron, Violet, Zane).
My less favorite names are ones I consider overused (Jason, Crystal, Todd, Mackenzie, Aidan and anything that rhymes with it), names picked out of the dictionary or Fortune 500 (Destiny, Magic, Cadillac), or clunky-sounding names with extra syllables (DeVontay, Christabella, Jadeveon, Demetrios...names you see in the NFL or gothic romances).

I don't have an ending to this...I just really like names. Anyone else?

I love them too- I find the meanings and language origins most fascinating. I found a few old baby books my parents used when they named me one day, and from then on I was hooked. Thankfully, then the internet was invented, so I could look at all the names I wanted, without having a pile of baby naming books nearby. Yay internet.

I'm hooked as well. It's nice to find other people with the same hobby as I do. Are any of you on Nameberry? I am and their name games are brilliant.

I used to have this one. Still do like good names, though. I used to read my mom's baby names book during breakfast. I still use it occasionally for naming characters. I also use these:

First names
Surnames

Some of my favorite names include Historia, Celyn, Mia, Oceana, Isabella, and Elwyn.

Don't forget the guy born "Marion Morrison" (not a good name for a cowboy). Better known as "John Wayne". Or the Israeli politician born "David Green", who would later assume the name "David Ben Gurion" (meaning 'son of the lion' in Hebrew).

Sometimes the opposite happens and the person is born with the right name. The man who saved France from the Germans as a general, and who later saved France from itsself (as a politician) was born with an oddly appropriate name that means "of France" ( De Gaul).

True! Or the famous Frankish (French) military leader Charles Martel, whose surname means "the hammer." :)

Yeah I did a lot of this too. I find name meanings to be really fascinating. I almost dislike the simple dumbed down names we have in this current century. I'm also a really big JRR Tolkien fan and he was a language professor. My username is actually partially based on his name Feyo-kien. I've also got a fascination with the Elder Futhark.
