Flickery avatars, adverts and images

I think I'm somewhat more sensitive to flickering images on screen than the average, but maybe I'm wrong.

I like well thought out animated graphics. I can watch them happily, once.

If it is smooth, slow, long period, I can tolerate it.

If it is fast, abrupt, flickery, I have to cover it with my hand.

People whose posts contain such things, or whose avatars are like that, I generally give up reading their posts and skip straight past, which is a pity.

I suspect we are a bunch that quite often have this as a sensitivity.

NB. Two options I felt I could not put on the list, because I was trying to keep this moderately light, were "... commence a migraine attack." and "... have an epileptic fit.".

Sigh. When you've got one above the text box and one to the low left, and you try to scroll between them but end up with two flickering images, then you can't type because both hands are busy - well you're left with no choice but to leave the site - although you won't actually be logged out. I think I was logged on here for 6 months because once I forgot to log out.

They irritate and distract me unless I am specifically wishing to look at them, and moving adverts really annoy me, they give me a headache.

I use my browser's ad-blocking capabilities to get rid of the thing.

There should be the option to scroll down the page away from the annoying graphics.

The same as lowfreq50, I answered "do something else" and that's scroll to get rid of the image. it's really annoying. I don't know if I twitch from it but I can't read or pay attention to anything else when there is flickering. I find it hypnotic and harmful. I don't watch news stations, especially Fox News-I believe they use the flickering to mesmerize people into a placid/neurotic state. Advertisers and stations wouldn't use flickering unless it worked.

I was going to say "You can't do that with an avatar", but then... maybe you can.

I can imagine a way I could suppress/replace an avatar (or some other specific image):
Figure out where the cache entry is, and replace that with what I'd like to see instead.

Oh bother. I'm being silly. Firefox already has this as an extension. called (I'm not too surprised) "ImgLikeOpera".
Unfortunately, it doesn't say it works with SeaMonkey, so chances are that it won't.

And now I've found "Adblock Plus", which does work with SeaMonkey.
Does it do what I want, though? I'll find out... tomorrow.

I hate flickery avatars. I try to cover them up whenever possible.

I find most flickering lights and images to be a bit more than annoying.
I have some photo-tropic issues(ie: migraines). Fortunately my browser
blocks most ads that have flickers or movement.

I have the same issues, Richie. I need to change the settings on my browser. Those ads drive me crazy on the site. Usually I can move the window and block them but not always.

I havne’t seen any ads here. I’ve got that pop-up stopper program and it’s quite miraculous.

not only can i not stand the flickery avatars, i cannot stand when the monitors flicker. this gets to be bad at work if i have to do something to someone's computer and the monitor frequency can't be changed. if i tell the netadmin about it, he will usually come over and take over for that particular machine until we can replace the monitor.

The really obnoxious ones that use a lot of primary colors are very distracting, but there were a few moving avatars that I liked a lot.....most notably the one that was once used by Nomaken. MySpace is notorious for using really jittery embedded ads that cannot be blocked to my knowlege. In that case, I either reload the page to get something less obnoxious, or barring that, I scroll the so the ad is not visible.

Yes, it will block generalized stuff, like *.advertising.com/*, or something as specific as a single image. That's what I use on Firefox.
