BDNF levels: A.S. disorders Biomarker? I'll check mine!
Hi,
I came acros various articles on the internets which all said that BDNF might be high in autism and might in fact be the cause of autism.
then came across this: Serum Brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in Chinese children with autism spectrum disorders
And thought OMG WTF a marker for Autism spectrum disorder or what? but then I came across this: Possible role of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in autism spectrum disorders: Current Status Which relativates that a bit.
But even in the later analysis, 9 studies say BDNF was increased.
I found a lab which would do the test and I called them. The test costs 43 euros and that's fair. Theoretically, if I don't have AS, it should come out pretty pretty low, because I'm also depressed and the primary use of it (in germany at least) is to detect depression. If it comes out moderately high to very high then there is something wrong I suppose (AS-Wise).
<Wild Speculation>I am not quite sure what BDNF is, but what I know is that it somehow makes you make new connections. And if you have too much of it, I suppose you make so much connections that you can't make correct use of it anymore, like disorganized connections and such. At least that's my theory. Makes kind of sense to me that people with A.S. disorders need sameness. their brain is changing (making new useless connections) all the time and they want to somehow produce a feeling of sameness in their ever changing brain. makes sense to me.
Or hold to special interests vigorously or memorizing stuff. the same thing. trying to use those new connections in an attempt to get those new out of the box not yet usable connections organised.</Wild Speculation>

Possibly Aspie (diagnosed by an autism expert, doc moves abroad, forced to change docs and all say it's schizophrenia NOS or schizo-affective disorde or personality disorders. initial doc was a colleague of uncle Simon btw. you do the math.). (edit: by Uncle Simon I mean Simon Baron Cohen. Just to clear things up.)
