getting kids meals at 16
Today I was in my local uno Chicago grill and I got a kids meal. We had an unrelated problem with the waitress so we decide to get the manager I asked the manager it was okay if I was eating my kids meal at this age I told Her I'm developmentally disabled and actually before that I told her I wanted to have a kids meal birthday party and I asked her if they accommodate developmentally disabled kids who want to have the kids birthday party at an older age. Anyway she was very nice and accommodating but even give me a second kids menu because I told him I like keeping kids and use the drawing. I told her that like other kids with special needs I have sort of digestive issues with food and pickyness to eating and she said it's perfectly fine if I order off the kids menu.
They said all of my need to do is call and set up a birthday party and let them know about my disability and stuff like that.
How late did you/ your child get a kids meals until?
What do you think the policy on kids menus should be?
Usually I get the kids no problem but in certain places like pizza and brew and I can't get it and they tell me the age which is usually 10 or under in these fancy resteraunts.
Do you think if I told him they would accommodate me too?
Do you think my doctor would write a note about this or something?
Do you think teens/Adults should be able to eat kids menus and at a higher price or even at the same price?
If you ran a restaurant what age would you stop kids menus for regular kids and then developmentally disabled kids/ adults?

I don't think there should be an age limit to being able to order a kid's meal. "Kid's meals" is really just a label put on certain foods and portion sizes that are said to be more suitable or appealing for kids. So I think anyone should be able to order a kid's meal, regardless of whether they have a disability or not.
Agreed. Some people like my mom can't eat large portions of food at times so she get's a kids meal say at fast food restaurant instead of a full size one. Same with me at times, since I cannot eat a large portion of food the majority of the time.

I've spent most of my adulthood buying Happy Meals and other "kid's meals" mainly for the toys that come with them, and I've never had a problem doing so. If I don't want the meal I can usually buy the toy without it. A lot of them are figures of characters from cartoons and movies I like and since they're cheap they're easy to collect and you can find a lot of older ones at flea markets that the kids lost interest in but are popular with adult collectors.
Actually I haven't gone hunting for kid's meal toys much at all since they brought out Neopets figures at Burger King a few years ago. Either they're just not as good or I have enough figures already.

I used to love getting the kids meal but I stopped when I was about seven and a half because I was a glutton and I wanted more food (also I thought I was being really cool and mature by getting the large sized adult meal). Any, it was around this time that I went from being really skinny to really fat.
If some places don't let you get the kids meal past a certain age, I think it might be because they want to make more money and the kids meal doesn't cost as much. Fast food places might not care because they make a profit on everything but I think for restaurants the kids meal might be a loss leader, being sold for less than what it's worth to attract families.
OP, you're developmentally disabled? I never would've spotted it. You write quite eloquently.

I think for fast food anyone should be able to get a kids meal if they want...with the fancier places not sure exactly why they have an age limit, I guess they figure they don't want teenagers or adults coming in just buying the cheap kids menu and then eating adult portions of food for a lesser price to 'save money' So with those places that are strict on an age limit probably would not be very accomodating....As for the birthday thing I do not think they have an age limit for renting out space, so not sure if it is technically really an accomidation, maybe they just have no age policy for renting out for birthdays or whatever.

I've never understood putting an age limit on the kid's menu. If an adult wants a smaller portion size and a toy or menu with crayons or something then they should be allowed to have it.

I've worked at many restaurants/pubs.
I think it's entirely acceptable to have an age specified on kids menu items, say 10 or 12 or whatever.
But I also think it's OK to make exceptions for developmentally disabled people who are child-like regardless of their age, or seniors who don't have large appetites.
Basically, it should be up to the staff/management's discretion & age policies for kids menu items exist to protect sales/profits from more expensive meals. It prevents a large group coming in & taking up a table while they order the cheapest thing on the menu. That's not good for business, obviously. Further, kids menu items are usually fairly low profit as the prices are discounted so that parents can afford to take their families out for a meal - and the restaurant gets to make a bit of a better profit from the adults' meals & drinks in exchange for selling kids meals inexpensively.

If I had a restaurant, I'd probably make kids meals available to everyone without age limit. I probably wouldn't have a senior citizens discount, though, since they would have the kids meal as an option.
The one exception is for any food served family style. That is, where the food would be brought to the table on platters for the people at the table to serve themselves with unlimited refills of sides. For anything like that, the kids meal price would not be generally available between some reasonable ages, say 14 and 60.
Where I live, it isn't very crowded. If you have much of a menu, you can bet that some things would rarely be ordered. I think that the way to do it would be to only have about four or five entrees on the menu and then about three or four daily specials to choose between. Any of them would come with a choice of two or three of the day's vegetables.
I once tried to order a kid's meal at Wendys because I wanted the toy but they told me I couldn't do that and told me to get a junior burger. I was 18. I guess they had an age restriction on their kids men but not for the juniors menu. Luckily McDonalds has no age limit for their kids menu and you can buy the toy separate.

I used to have a ferocious appetite that would result in continual problems with obesity. Now at the old age of 60 - my system seems to have radically changed and a "kids meal" would be just about right for me now.

People like you are why many restaurants have a senior's menu.
Yah one time when I was 17 we were standing in-line at mcdonalds and I was begging my mom to get me a happy meal because I wanted a Hello Kitty Doll. I was like mom I want a happy meal! Apparently the people behind us were pretty amused so they start laughing. I don't know why, all I wanted was a happy meal. Besides who can resist hello kitty?
