Like if someone thinks I'm acting weird because I'm fidgety or talking alot to someone alot on the bus or asking alot questions, I tell them I have autism. Is that a bad thing?

I don't think it's bad or weird to, but I worry that it could backfire.

I can see why you do.

Not weird.

Probably not a good thing to open a conversation with though.

Unless they are on the spectrum too, then it's probably the coolest thing they've ever heard.

Yeah , I agree with both posters , I don't think it's bad or wierd if you trying to explain your behaviour. I've found that I have often said things to strangers due to nerves and not knowing what to say that I've regretted but it's never backfired for me - yet :) .

I only tell people if they call me out on the signs at work or with friends. However I make it known that I no longer qualify for a diagnosis but have "residual" signs left over. Everyone has their quirks though.

Unless it's someone you hang out with a lot I think it's better not to tell them. When I was diagnosed with autism I told my class and they looked a whole different way at me. It put's you under a looping glass when you do something out of order. And it makes people wanne hang out less with you because you are now weird. People will gossip about you etc etc. Atleast that's my experience.

In my own experience people will do this anyway. I suppose it would provide something more obvious for them to gossip about though.

No, it is not strange to tell people you have Autism Spectrum Disorder.
