Yesterday I was with my mother driving through an unfamiliar town and for some reason something in my head went wrong. It began as a mild feeling of uneasiness and evolved into a point where I was absolutely terrified, I felt like there was a weight on my stomach and I was shaking. I eventually began to grab on to my arms and rock back and forth feeling somewhat cold, it took me about an hour to calm down and I was extremely confused as to what just happened. I was curious if anyone else has had a similar experience and might be able to let me better understand it.

Sounds like a potential panic attack, sometimes it can be hard to break it down to what exactly the trigger could have been. Other then that perhaps picking up on a bad energy in the area, though not sure if you believe in that kind of thing but I have certainly came into areas where something just does not feel right and have had similar feelings...where I think its something more than anxiety originating from my mind.

If you could identify what exactly triggered your untoward response, that would help you to win at least half the battle.

What was it about the town which caused those feelings? Think about it. Was it merely because it was a different town? Did something about it trigger bad memories?

It doesn't matter if the "reaction" was "normal." It was your reaction. You took steps to calm down (which is a plus). You didn't "react" to it by DOING something dangerous. I think it's a point of pride that you were calm and rational enough to try to offset the feeling.

That's a panic attack. No fun but it won't kill you. When it happens again try deep breathing exercises. This will help to relax your body. Not sure there is much point in trying to figure out the trigger, just accept that it is going to happen sometimes. The more times it happens the easier it becomes deal with.
