Has anyone else had difficulty accepting their diagnosis?

I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was just 5 years old, and growing up I always wanted to be accepted by my peers so I always tried to act as normal as possible... with not a whole lot of success. I was like this when I was a teenager too, and it wasn't until I met another autistic friend online along with seeing a therapist that I've accepted who I am today. I'm curious about what everyone else's struggles were with this though, and if you also tried to pretend that you were normal or if you were in denial about being autistic.

I didn't personally try to ever act "more NT" (at least, not consciously), but looking at other posts on here, what you felt was pretty normal among aspies.

Sure, but only in the beginning (as you can see from my signature, i have pddnos).
At first i was almost mad for the doctor to put a label on me. I felt like i was misdiagnosed and that I possibly could not have any kind of developmental issue. Although i have now come to realize that the diagnosis fits me and that is who i am.

I did in the beginning. I think although I have signs of asd I don't actually have asd though.
