Should we test our daughter for Fragile X?
I know that's kind of a weird thing to ask a bunch of strangers, but when it was mentioned briefly, I said "no, she doesn't have Fragile X". I was so bold-faced about it, having read something a while back, but then I got home from a specialist appointment and started reading something else and while my reading led me to conclude it most often occurs in males, there is a slight possibility, given that my brother has some kind of developmental issue that was never addressed and we don't know what it is, but we always attributed it to a difficult birth. I also had a trying birth with my daughter and there were some complications, some almost mimicked my mother's experience.
But if it were Fragile X, the birth wouldn't make a difference, if it were genetic, right? Neurological issues appeared in my brother and myself (seizures) around puberty. There was no known history of it in our family before us two. It was determined idiopathic in nature.
So, given that little information and that my husband is most likely on the spectrum (because he just thinks different - and most of the time it's great! - makes for interesting perspectives), I'm wondering... would it make a different if she were? I did read there were some differences in how she may be taught, but it all seemed pretty vague. - Just a parent doing what she can to try and help her kid grow to live a full and happy life.
