So I don't really care about this but I'm wondering what other people think. Some time ago, I won this grant from Autism Speaks:

http://www.autismcares.org/site/c.mqLOI ... 1/Home.htm

In the application, I indicated that I was undiagnosed. They didn't ask for any proof. When I finally got the results of my assessment last week, they said that I didn't have Asperger's, so basically I got $1000 that was supposed to be for autistic people and their families even though I'm in neither of those groups.

Do you think it was wrong? Should undiagnosed people not apply for the grant?

Ok it's up now.

No, I don't think it's wrong. You had to have:

"Natural disaster: fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, severe storm or earthquake
Death or critical illness in the immediate family
Loss of home through foreclosure, eviction or natural disaster
Loss of job for the primary income-earner
Violence: domestic abuse or crime"

And if you had any of those then it doesn't seem wrong to have money to help. I'd feel dishonest about it but if you need money you need money.

But if you didn't have any of those then no.

So I'd go for in extreme circumstances, so long as you declare you're not diagnosed.

Hmm...maybe donate the money to the autism organizations which actually dedicate their funds to helping people who need it :) (only 4% of Autism Speaks' funds go to helping families in need)

Unless an Autism Speaks grant requires certain repugnant conditions after receiving the grant, I would support accepting the money. After all, it would do more good in the hands of real people with ASD (diagnosed or self-aware) than to remain in their hands. But, I wouldn't intentionally lie to receive the grant.

I should have titled this post, "Wrong to take money from autistic people?"

I applied for housing reasons. I was homeless at the time.

I would find it extremely difficult if not impossible to accept any money from them.

You declared you were undiagnosed and were in an extreme circumstance. I see absolutely nothing wrong with what you did.

You thought you had it when you applied & you could still use the money even thou the assessment said you don't have it & assessments can be wrong so there's not harm in taking it. If AS wanted you to be sure you had it; they would of required documentation.

Being on the ASD spectrum myself, I see nothing wrong with taking money from Autism Speaks. I mean, they offer money for people like us, so why not take it?

I don't know what your situation is right now, but I probably wouldn't accept it if I were in your shoes. This grant is one of the few things AS is doing that is beneficial to autistic people and their families. You can't really justify taking the grant money if you don't meet the full criteria for recieving it. Yes, they have deep pockets, but it still won't change the fact that there is somebody out there who was denied this grant who probably needed it as desperately as you.

I don't blame you for wanting to keep it, though. If you have to eat, you have to eat.
