Asperger's versus Autism
So far from what I've seen, the average autistic person learns verbal communication relatively slow. Most of the people I've seen here are autistic and I haven't really seen anyone with Asperger's syndrome that I know of. I was wondering if there is a difference in the language area in the two. So to all of you with any diagnosis what so ever please state the ages when you were able to talk and communicate like an adult as well as when you learned things such as: slang, sarcasm, facial expressions and anything else that you can think of.
Vocabulary - At the age of two I was able to talk like a full grown adult
Amount of communication - Selectively mute from the age of 3 until the age of 8
Slang - Still currently learning
Sarcasm - Learned at the age of 15
Facial expressions - Still learning, I am able to comprehend basic expressions such as a smile, frown etc.
Athough this is how I was it seems the opposite for my little brother and sister. their ages are I believe 5 and 6. They are still attempting to learn how to talk in complete sentences. Also while I was almost never heard speaking a word they are always talking so this is what made me think that their may be a difference. They seem to be autistic instead of asperger's. While they do prosper in other areas such as the areas that I did not it's the same vice versus.
Also in the physical aspect we all share a common ability to do many physical activities very well, such as my sister would have been competing in the age group that is almost double hers because she is naturally skilled in the areas of balance and movement, me and my brother on the other hand are very good at rock climbing. Perhaps this is just a different trait that has nothing to do with Asperger's or autism but in all I have 4 siblings besides me and the only ones that have great physical stamina are the ones that have some kind of Asperger's or autism. After a few replies I'm sure It will become clear whether it is just a coincidence.

Vocabulary - Age of 2 or 3 I believe, though I don't remember too much
Amount of Communication - I never cried as a baby, I never liked talking to new people, but could speak openly with familiar people. Hasn't changed
Slang - Learned when I was... 12 I think.
Sarcasm - I grew up with 2 really sarcastic sisters, so I learned pretty quick at around age 5
Facial Expressions - I can understand many expressions, both basic and a few complex. Still not one of my stronger traitss.
My 19 yr old brother can't speak and has never been able to. (Low functioning autism)
My twin(15) brother learned to speak simple words at 2 and was speaking in full sentences by 4. (HFA when younger, now mid functioning.)
Vocabulary - Full sentences at 8 months, adult vocabulary by 18 months or so.
Amount of Communication - Hypersocial until around the age of 5, the became extremely quiet antering into the school system. Still shy to this day.
Slang - Learned normally.
Sarcasm - Mild delay but learned relatively normally. Ocasionally stumble across something I don't get but very rarely.
Facial Expressions - Can understand only basic and rarely complex. Ususally take a guess and hope it's right. Fearing the worst also helps seeing you come across more caring and less ignorant.
Vocabulary: I dunno, I think I spoke quite normally... except that instead of using day-to-day and informal pronounciation for words, I pronounced some words in a... bookish way. (There is a lot of difference between written and spoken Persian) My parents said I liked to pronounce things "correctly".
Amount of communication: I only liked communicating with family members when I was very small, and it turned into "very close friends and can barely stand family members" at age 8 or so.
Slang: My mom has bought me a slang book so I know some expressions but most of the time I have to ask "what does that mean?" when people use slang terms.
Sarcasm: Didn't even know what it was before the age of 9, I think. I can understand it but not use it. I always mix it up if I try to use it.
Facial expressions: I know that frowning means sadness, grinning means happiness, and glaring means anger, but most of the time I confuse a grin with baring teeth and a glare with a frown, and things like that.
Vocabulary - I didn't speak until I was 4, I think later that same year I was able to speak full sentances.
Amount of Communication - Until I was about 12-13 I was very talkative.
Slang - Learned normally
Sarcasm - I have always been aware of it, but I didn't fully understand it until late childhood.
Facial Expressions - I don't really pay much attention to facial expressions and I never have, exept for the "bitchy look", I noticed it on the face of my bullies all the time but no one else did.

Just wondering but what age does everyone consider normal?

I spoke full sentences between 14 and 18 months. My mother isn't sure of the exact time, but we fenced it between two benchmarks!
Vocabulary -- Not sure when I first was that good, but I was reading adult books by 5!
Slang -- Isn't EVERYONE still "learning"?
Sarcasm I learned a bit late, but don't know exactly when.
I can do ok with things like rock climbing. My stamina used to be GREAT! I still remember being laughed at because I didn't go as fast as this guy. I always held back. Well, I decided he needed to be taught a lessen.(We were both running a track) I sped up, passed him, and I kept running until a while AFTER HE gave up! Hey, ever see the swim race on gattaca? I was just like vincent!b BTW I was diagnosed with ASTHMA, and that was a normal PE class.
In gattica, anton and vincent generally swam a race. Anton, Engineered superior, ALWAYS won! Vincent, who was natural and had a bad heart, one day got tired of losing, and kept going. Anton tried to race, and nearly drowned. VINCENT saved him, and went back. STILL, vincent was always considered inferior, and had to try to PASS as a superior person to realize his life long dream of space travel. Up till the very end his very BROTHER, whom he saved, was tryig to keep him from getting away with it!

Dx: Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD respectively at 31 years of age (AS) and 32 years of age (ADHD) (I'm an only child)
Vocabulary - Single words before 18 months, 2-3 word phrases by 2, full sentences (mature aka adult-like) at 2 1/2.
Amount of Communication - Pretty quiet from infancy till teenage years (think when teenage years the hyperactivity from the ADHD and all kinda helped towards a bit more towards extroversion), spoke mainly to adults or kids much younger, rarely to peers.
Slang - Still learning at 33 years of age, some as early as pre-teens, some I still don't understand now.
Sarcasm - Didn't really use or understand sarcasm till I was in my early 20's that I recall.
Facial Expressions - I can understand a few expressions, mainly sad or happy or angry, most others I'm pretty blurred on. I'm not good at reading body language. Most times if I see someone with a somewhat neutral expression, I can't read it at all and often find it either makes me feel like they are mad or something.
Vocab - I spoke like an adult from the age of 3.
Amount - Low with people I wasn't familiar with, but I could carry on a conversation for hours with an adult I was comfortable with.
Slang - I'm not sure if it has to do with my hyperlexia, but slang has always been easy for me. Slang is always just a roundabout word connection made in a free associative manner as per the cultural surroundings (a gun being called "cooker" because the guy you'd shoot would be done like a steak, etc.), which is something I specialize in.
Sarcasm - I sucked at sarcasm until high school. I took things far too literally, and I still have to catch myself from time to time. I also find myself compulsively answering rhetorical questions even though I consciously know they're not to be answered.
Facial expressions - Completely over my head until about middle school. I still have some trouble with them.
Vocabulary - Spoke first word (blanket) at one, didn't really speak until four. However, I could read at three.
Amount of communication - I talk practically non-stop!
Slang - Learned in third or fourth grade.
Sarcasm - Learned in kindergarten.
Facial expressions - Known my whole life.
Vocabulary - First words at around1, then stopped talking until 14 months. Not sure when I began using sentences.
Amount of communication - Low enough for people who saw me every day to ask if I could talk.
Slang - Still currently learning. Can understand most of it, but it grates.
Sarcasm - Age 6
Facial expressions - Not sure. Can read very subtle ones now, but not consistently, and I often forget to pay attention to them.

Aspie. Age 23. Very good verbal skills; severely impaired nonverbal communication. I think they cancel out--I use "big words" to caputre nuances of meaning in the same way that NTs use nonverbal communication.
Vocabulary - Full-blown by age five; then at age six I learned English after moving to the USA, and was again speaking like an adult by age eight. I never really had "childish" speech; it was always pretty grammatical.
Amount of communication - I tend to "lecture", which is one-sided communication with impaired give-and-take. So there's a lot of information being given, but little actual communication--I learn better from people who lecture to me, or from books.
Slang - I get this easily enough from books I read; but I have to think a second before I get the figurative meaning. Sometimes I reply to the literal meaning before I figure it out.
Sarcasm - Most of the time, I don't get it until a minute later. I'm still learning this.
Facial expressions - Don't get any data from these at all, except that I know a smile means "I'm not hostile, and I wish to be social with you". Body language and tone of voice are both easier to read than facial expressions. Doesn't help to be faceblind.

Vocabulary - was slow, at aged 15 was the equivalent to the average 10 year old. At age 30 was at least at tertiary level
Amount of communication - Still mute much of the time, very rarely talk at length for more than 20 second "off the cuff". Longer speeches have to be prepared. I just but in occasionally to say my bit and that is it. I find it much much easier to write and lengh than speak at length unless the speech is prepared.
Slang - About 10
Sarcasm - Learned at the age of 11
Facial expressions - Still learning, learned laughter and crying very early at 4; smiling at 9; Disgust, anger and surprise I still find very difficult.
