I hate this feeling, of losing a special interest. I was obsessed with the Dragon Age series for so long, and it just wore off... leaving me feeling empty and lost, and depressed. And now nothing is catching my interest at all. The Jane Austen movies did for a week or two, then I got bored. Started watching different Nordic themed movies (Outlander, 13th Warrior, etc) but it's boring me now.

How does one get a special interest? I don't remember ever having this problem before, or if I had, I don't remember how it got fixed. Does anyone else get this problem and how do you fix it, or is it just a waiting game? It's making me (more) anxious.

Maybe try going back to an old special interest.

Look for things that naturally flow from your old interests maybe, like for example, I like anime, and it has led for me to a special interest in J-pop, Japanese culture, drawing manga, and Japanese language, which helped me to discover my interest for languages in general.

I'm the same I used to like movies and games up until around 2003 and now there's nothing. I keep downloading the odd old movie here and there. About 1/5 will turn out to be great movies. I browse around on IMDB looking for movies related to the ones I already know I like. My special interests of old were PSX-era games, web development and LOTR.

I having the same problem ... I don't have a special interest at the moment for the first time in my life and it's so depressing. I feel like I need something for my brain to get obsessed about, to feel happy about.

I have always let my special interests flow organicly. You would be amazed at the from to aspect of special interests. I could read a comic book about something that makes a reference to something else unrelated to the comic or comics in general and before I know it I am looking it up on wikipedia. But then again I tend to look EVERYTHING up if I am not sure about it... I guess looking things up on wikipedia is an interest..

Maybe stick to a subject you like but try a new medium. If you like books and movies, try comics. "Nothrlander" is a comic about Vikings that is supposed to be amazing. I have only seen the art since I love the artists work in general and it looks to be a pretty good read.

I've been able to have multiple interests at a time, but one was always the major while the others were temporary. Like with Dragon Age, I think that one lasted from 2009 to now, and I had various other interests that would peak and wane with Dragon Age being a constant. The major one always has to do with escapism... anything that lets me daydream, come up with new stories, or just escape in any fashion, especially fantasy/historical, or scifi/futuristic.
I should go through my library again, revisit favorite books since the movies/shows are doing nothing... My interests in general are so varied, it's hard to even know where to start. Video games, movies, books, music, history...

That sounds like something to check out. The Norse have always been a fascinating subject to me.

For me it is a waiting game. Something always comes around. The last few days I was bored and restless after a few weeks of Fallout; then a history book I ordered showed up. I spent the morning reading it and look forward to reading more, so I guess I'm set for another few weeks. :D
