Last year at my apartments there were some painters painting a nearby building in the complex. I absolutely hate hearing whistling for more than like 10 seconds. One of the painters whistled loudly all day long. I refrained from complaining that day, but they were back the next, and the guy was whistling loudly again. I called the complex to ask how many more days they'd be there. They said 3 or 4 more days. I walked over to ask the painter if he would please not whistle. He didn't speak English, so I called the apt. manager and asked her if she could get the guy to stop. She told the guy's supervisor and he talked to the guy -- I saw it when he did it -- there was a lot of laughing about it, as if it was a crazy request, and the guy kept on whistling.

So, I called the manager again. She acted like it was an insane request, but, I guess to humor a good tenant, she walked on over (she speaks spanish) and asked him to stop whistling. This time he did stop -- until the last 15 minutes -- then out of pure rebellion he whistled louder than ever for those last 15 minutes.

I hate that sort of thing -- where something absolutely drives me up a wall, and goes on and on, so I have no recourse but to complain. That happened all the time at work as well. There was a guy in an adjacent office who would always use his speakerphone, turned up real loud.... but that's another long story. Just one thing after another like that.

There's one guy in my dorms who does this constantly, and it is really annoying.

I've never been able to whistle, by the way.
The sound of whistling hurts my ears-the worst is tea kettles-they're "cringeworthy". Just thinking about it makes my skin prickly & my scalp tingle, not in a good way. I'm a daily drinker of hot tea, but I use a small pan/pot on the stove to boil the water.
It's the shrill high-pitch that drills into my brain & puts me in danger-alert-mode. Low humming resonant whistling-type-of-noise (such as that used by Mongolian shephards) is okay, that's more like a droning vacuum cleaner sound.

I hate tuneless humming...I don't mind singing I do it myself..and possibly don't realise that it annoys people...but there is this sort of hum hat people do sometimes where there is no melody or key and it drives me up the wall.

I totally agree with you!! ! That would have driven me insane. I guess I hate most noises that people can make with their mouths (gum chewing and popping, potato chip crunching, soup slurping, etc.) What's so frustrating for me is that people can't understand how it's possible to be so sensitive so they think you're just being ridiculous. So either they just keep doing it or they do it even more and louder just to mess with you. That's a big reason why I'm such a hermit. I've learned not to bother complaining because it never does any good. :x

I disklike high frequencies in general. Whistling sucks. A number of years ago I went down to a company where I did some consulting work and told them they either had to replace a computer hard drive with bad bearings or I'd leave, they replaced the hard drive.

Same here. And in the workplace, not only does it do no good, but it can actually work against you. You get labeled as an overly sensitive troublemaker and it comes back to haunt you in your job evaluations.

I don't think there's much you can do besides trying hard to build a resistance.
