I'm not sure how I can solve this eternal problem... it would be way, way worse if I lived below someone, but even living on the top floor I can hear all these thuds whenever the guy below me bumps into something... sometimes, as if the orchestra isn't tuned finely enough, there's a 'dong' when someone happens to bump into the metal outside.

Argh... why oh why can't buildings be made a bit more better built...

Well I hear my neighbors moaning even when I'm listening to videos with my headphones on.

I heard a bug walking across the room while I was trying to sleep. I keep an industrial size jar of earplugs for times like this, and when I travel, and when I am around babies, or females, or anybody who likes talking, or in traffic, afound radios, etc... I sleep on the floor so I hear every footstep in the building. I have gotten to where I can identify who it is and their mood by the timing and force of thier steps.

I also find my sense of smell to be unpleasantly sensitive and accurate.

I am on the top floor as well, and I too can hear absolutely everything my neighbors do. I thought about soundproofing but my boyfriend (an audio engineer) said it wouldn't keep the sounds out (it only keeps them in). What about some white noise? We have two air purifiers that run on low at all times, and they help.

I laughed at the comment about hearing the bug walking, that happens to me all the time!

I hear this steady, rhythmical thumping all of the time. It's usually soft and barely noticeable, but I can still hear it if I concentrate. The sound gets louder and faster whenever I exert myself or get excited, and then returns to its normal pattern after I've calmed down for a while. This has been going on my whole life, and I think I'd miss it if it ever stopped. What do you think it is? It's my heartbeat!

I blame manners. Buildings are actually better made and more sound-resistant than ever and yet we hear certain sounds and activities from neighbors and their friends. Before about 1980, I never knew of a family celebration that was as loud as a frat party, but, now, they are commonplace. Yes, bad manners. Most people are worse mannered than barnyard animals. The animals at least know when to call it a day and go to sleep.

Yes and animals don't drive around with their stereo systems blaring out hip-hop either. Those are the only kind of thumps I hear, as I don't have neighbours above or below me, and my neighbours to either side don't seem to own bassy hi-fi systems, not so far anyway.

Fnord,

I think that might be your heart. If so, you will certainly miss it.

Do you possess inner peace?

Why should it matter?

I'm very attuned to car doors slamming.

Fnord,

"mouse over and highlight"? Is that how to make those nice little quote boxes? I am new to this site and I am not great with computers to begin with. I can't tell if you are giving me a helpful tip or telling me that I misread a joke or something.

I thought that hearing your heart was somewhere on the path to inner peace. I don't know.

Sensitivity to noises is common with ASD. I have it myself (though much worse when I was a kid).

Quote:
Pulsatile tinnitus is one specific type of tinnitus that is not as prevalent, but can be quite debilitating. People explain this condition a hearing their heartbeat in their ear. In this case, the individual hears the sounds of his own pulse or muscle contractions.

These sounds are related to blood flow of the neck or face. Tinnitus is different in that it is a steady noise. Whereas, pulsatile tinnitus produces sounds similar to thumping or beating.
