ok. i cannot deal with the sound of metal on a plate. eating at a table with multiple people can be really stressful for me. luckily my last social meal was casual with plastic utensils. not many people know about this except my close friends/mom. i have trouble unloading the dishwasher as the metal is just so loud. in fact i never do. how can this become less of a problem? i can force myself to eat off of metal if i absolutely HAVE to, but it is really hard for me. if it touches my teeth in any way i just want to scream and run away. i use plastic exclusively at home, except for eating cereal which i eat with a metal spoon.

You might be misophonic. I'm mildly misophonic and hate the exact same sounds.

Apparently misophonia is rare...or something. I am diagnosed with aspergers and I experience other sensory issues aside from this, but this is one that has been causing me trouble lately. But not focusing on it seems to help. Or not. Because then when you try to not focus on something its all you can think about. I've been eating in my room a lot. With my plastic :)

My sock keeps twisting around and my shirt keeps coming untucked. It's driving me nuts! Wait, it's driving me nuttier!

I hate the sound of certain people's voices, mostly loud, brash ones (but not usually loud singing), whistling, most ringtones, some laughter, some sounds that contain too much HF (i.e. strident sounds), and tinny little speakers such as the ones on most laptops. Probably a lot more sounds I can't recall right now.

Apparently misophonia also includes visual things:

I definitely dislike fidgeting and movements I can see out of the corners of my eyes.

Sometimes I think there's a psychological element to it, but it could be purely physical with an impression of it being psychological due to rationalisation. For example, if somebody whistles, I tend to think I've just grown up to feel that it's uncouth to whistle in public or that I've got a personal dislike against the person who's doing it, but it could just be the sound itself that's triggering my nerves.

I find earplugs/headphones helpful for dampening the impact of unpleasant sounds; I wear mine frequently. I also have a problem with metal; hearing it clang puts me on edge and can cause sensory overload-induced shutdown and panic.

Earplugs are awesome. I have worn earplugs while unloading the dishwasher before. I wear them to sleep and I have for years.
