There is never a time when I am imitating a person when I communicate in any fashion. I always have a specific person in mind whom I am imitating, because for some reason I admire the person and whatever it is they are doing. Sex, gender, and even race and ethnicity matter not.

Anyone else with this experience?

But actually yes, I have more than once found myself sort of trying to act out a certain person or character I've found some sort of bond with. Like I will find myself trying to use their mannerisms or in my head view myself as if I were that person....and sometimes have gone as far as dressing as certain people...of course I've i've gotten older I am more subtle about it but as a child I was a lot more obvious about it. For instance if you've seen the Disney Hunchback of Notre Danm or whatever I really liked the character Esmeralda or whatever the main female character and would often times dress up like her around the age of 7...this happened with other characters I developed a liking/bond for as well but as I got older its gotten more subtle.

Yes I'm a bit of a copycat. I tend to borrow phrases I've heard before when I'm talking to people. I also borrow some of their intonation. Probably less these days that I used to.

I sometimes when I am uncomfortable with certain things I may impersonate the Carry on films such as Kenneth Williams when a woman gets a bit full on. Or in flirting with my ex back in 1986 I impersonated Charles Hawtrey and the strange thing it got the job done. It is an attempt to practice social skills without getting in people's Asperger syndrome, humour and general social bonding.

Personally, I seem not to have any control over my masks, in terms of which one I use.

I am such a mimicky person. I used to copy phrases and the nuances of sayings of my closest friends.

A couple of years ago, I worked with a British girl who was from Liverpool. I used to mimic her speech to myself when she would take drive thru orders. When I started imitating her openly, she said I did the best job of speaking in her Liverpool dialect. Everyone else spoke in poorly contrived cockney accent to try and imitate her. They are clearly different, like the difference between Australian and US, or Yankee and southerner.

Also, movie characters and such, Canadian accents, and even Sean Connery's unique Scottish accent, which is one of my favorites.

Same here. Its usually done unconsciously.
