My therapist and my social worker from my health care provider have talked to me about testing of the Neuropsych variety.. I've never had testing like this done before (that I remember) and my social worker person believes I would benefit from this testing.

But anyone else have Neuropsychological Testing done for a diagnosis? Are these the series of tests that are usually done on adults?
I don't understand how these tests work or what will be involved (its probably best I don't know?), it they can diagnose things using the testing results, right?

I honestly love the little suggestions feature on this forum.

So they do work in diagnosing but its only a piece of the whole thing. Yeah.

Okay.

I read the Web MD description. I did something similar when they administered the ADOS for me. Basically think IQ test type questions, only designed for specific different types of thinking. For example there was one to test working memory where they showed me a picture and I had to redraw it from memory at progressively longer intervals. Then they graded the accuracy over my reproduction over time to determine how well my memory functioned. None of the tests are really related specifically to autism, and I think they're more to show the assessor if there's something else that might also result in autism like symptoms, which is why they say that they're part of the diagnosis, but not all of it.

The impression that I have from my own diagnosis and my son's is that autism diagnosis is, in many ways, more art than science. There's no one test that conclusively says, "yep you're definitely on the spectrum". So a good diagnostician will administer many tests and consider them as a whole, along with their personal interactions with you.

They are not done to diagnose AS.

It is because people with AS are known to have highly variable "neuropsychological profiles" meaning they may have major strengths and major weaknesses. This is important to know for ongoing therapy for an AS patient who is having problems, to help target treatment.
