I like to watch children's shows and play with toys, but my mum doesn't like me doing it as it'd not 'age appropriate' and it really makes me feel bad as I do act my age...sometimes. I do feel hurt when my mum says this as well as 'I need to get out more.' But if I go to a new area I panic as I don't know what to expect or I shut off from other people and pull on my clothes. My family don't really understand and expect me to be normal, should I follow what they say?

Tell your mother to go to hell. (Disclaimer: Don't do that.) Watching children's shows and playing with children's toys isn't going to hurt anyone.

It's your life. Do as you please.

...But that's not an open invitation to chaos and anarchy.

I used to get that from my mum and so I did stop playing with toys but it wasn't so good for me. Maybe don't follow her advice lol.

Tell your Mom "It is normal for ME at the moment".

What harm does it do your mum if you watch children's shows?

Sounds like a cheek dont she realise what difficulties you face and if you like cartoons that is up to you and what is normal I thought that was a cake without cannabis. Do you mean allistic or neuroprivileged? :?:

I would recommend having your mother read this article when you both are calm and the "childishness" issue has not come up.
http://autism-help.org/behavior-socio-e ... opment.htm

It's extremely common for those on the spectrum to have a decreased social/emotional age compared to their chronological/intellectual age; it is, essentially, a symptom of autism. Does your mother get upset with you because of your other symptoms? In short, I say do what makes you happy; as long as it's not hurting yourself or anyone else, it really shouldn't be anyone else's concern.

Yes she does sometimes, and physically I am an 18 year old adult but I have quirks that make me act WAY younger, if I am told that I can't buy something I always buy or have to change my routine I become very upset and have a tantrum, and my mum does tell me to grow up, but if I cover my ears in a loud place my mum is a lot more understanding...which is weird.

"Normal" is boring! Weird and eccentric is more fun!

QFTMFT 8)
In the words of Vivian Stanshall:
If you're normal, I intend to be a freak for the rest of my life,
and I shall baffle you with cabbages and rhinoceroses in the kitchen
and incessant quotations from "Now We Are Six"
through the mouthpiece of Lord Snooty's giant poisoned electric head.
So there!

I was still watching TV shows designed for pre-schoolers well into my teens. They took me into a more comfortable place where the world seemed less complicated.

I think that sometimes playing with toys and watching TV shows for younger people and stuff actually can help to ground you and help you feel more secure and connected. At least that's what it was like for me. Even though I gave that up to please my family.
