I just recently got my diagnosis for AS. I first suspected that I'm autistic about a year ago when I started looking into it. The more I read the more I felt it described me.

Anyway a few weeks ago I went in for an assessment. It was a series of tests that in total took about three and a half hours to complete. Then after a few more weeks I was called back in and my diagnosis was confirmed.

It was a very validating experience for me. I was the first to suspect the diagnosis and I had to convince a few people before they believed me. So overall I am happy with the way things worked out.

I just wanted to know what your experiences were like. Was it a simple or complicated process? Was it you that suspected it or someone else? Were you happy or upset at the end of it all?

I was diagnosed when I was about three years old. I'm sure it wasn't a pleasant process; nothing was a present process for me when I was three.

Congratulations on the confirmation.

It was a relatively straight forward process for me, maybe because it was so obvious. It was my then partner who encouraged me to go through with it, I would never have done it on my own as I would have worried too much about traveling to and from the appointments. I wasn't as relieved as I thought I would be. I felt angry at what my parents put me through as a child and this was confirmation that they were very much in the wrong.

Cool. Welcome lol.

Me getting diagnosed was very complicated and long.

Family members thought I should see a Dr and he passed me to someone else then someone else and then someone who specialises in autism spectrum disorders. I did the DISCO assessment. The person who assessed me can to my house once a week for a few months, spoke to my parents and then I was diagnosed. From the beginning till my official diagnosis took 2 years lol.

I rejected it in the beginning but in the end, what it said about me in my report was true. Now I accept being on the spectrum and I'm glad I have a diagnosis because it's helped.

My family all thought I was on the spectrum and accepted it before me, I was very stubborn and didnt like to admit if I was having trouble.

My diagnosis was not sought out.

I was first assessed after a terrible fight with my sister which in the end, got me arrested, I was sent to the hospital and had to go there a few times and was assessed twice. After my assessment I was sent to a specialist and from there I was told I have autism. About a year after that I had another assessment which re-confirmed it.

The diagnoses was long, about a year or so until the diagnoses was final, and my dad only told me months after because he tried to keep it a secret.

No one really guessed it was autism however some talk of ADHD, Bipolar and even down syndrome at one point was suggested to my parents. They all knew something was up but couldn't pin point exactly what.

That is too bad about the legalities associated with your diagnoses, but have they turned out to be a good thing, or a bad thing to know?

That's good to hear.
I had a similar experience with my older brother, although it never got that serious. We get along just fine now but it was terrible when I was a kid growing up.

My diagnosis started with an intervention from my siblings. It involved a number of tests answered at home and sent back to the psych over a period of a few months. My sister had a structured phone interview with the clinician. I had a discussion with the clinician going over why things did and did not happen in my life and why I thought I did and did not have Aspergers. At the end she said she has no problem with diagnosing me. A few months later I received a 15 page diagnostic report.
