Observing your surroundings

I was at lunch today with a person who noticed that every 30 seconds or so, I would turn my head and observe all that was around me.

Does anyone else here do this?

Quite the opposite. Unless I'm alone. But if I'm in a conversation, I'm lucky to be alert enough to look both ways before crossing the street.

Yes. Not every 30 seconds or so but often enough.

If I'm not having to concentrate on something else (for instance a person) then I love looking at and studying my surroundings. Otherwise, I am too distraced just as pyraxis said: "I'm lucky to be alert enough to look both ways before crossing the street." That goes for me, too.

If I am concentrating (or trying to concentrate) on something/one else, then I could miss an asteroid hitting the earth (unless of course the other person stopped talking and we both go silent).

I will consciously break away so I
can reconnect to what is going on
around me. This keeps me in practice
in the eye and enviremental contact
issue, yet it is not a natural part of me.

I'm the same way. Every 5 to 10 minutes I have to remember what's going on around me, and to check the clock.

I try not to do that.

In public I do this too. Maybe I’m slightly paranoid, but I do like to know what is going on around me. My father taught me never to sit with my back to the door in a restaurant, so now when I am in any room in a public building I always position myself so I can see the door.

I was in a doctor’s office waiting room earlier today and was reading a magazine. Every minute or so I would look up and scan the room.

Yeah, I scan and observe alot. Exept for when I am all alone in my house I feel completely comfortable. In public places I am so paranoid and I look up alot, dunno why.

Yes, I tend to look around alot.

I only look around like that if I'm paranoid, and I'm usually looking around with this face O_O. So it's kind of like, obvious I'm getting a bit paranoid. Or I also do that if I non-verbally am trying to tell someone to leave me alone. Apperantly "Please, don't bother me" doesn't work these days.

yeah, i always take corner seats so it is easy to look around. I don't really think that it is just AS unique; just my thought.

I seem to have a similar ability to Paul Atreides. When in my home, I do sit with my back to the door. But by listening, I know exactly what rooms my family members are in, which way they are walking, what they are saying, and who is coming up the stairs. Even though the dining room and den are downstairs, I can tell which room they are sitting in if they are speaking.

Anywho, I look all around me every so often, but i have a pet cat that thinks the best way to get me to play is to jump on me

Maybe you are doing more than just listening, syncho. Not conciously anyhow.

I can guess pretty well who is behind me if someone from my immediate family walks up behind me (so long as I am not in a trance or caught up in something) and respond to them even before they say a word. The weird thing is that I am hearing impaired so I don't really hear them that well when they walk, but I can feel their feet strike the ground, see the change in ambient lighting (indirect shadows, in a way) and feel the air pressure shift when someone walks into a room. I guess one can do a lot with the other 4 senses.
