I am just interested how old everyone was when they got diagnosed I was 22 in 2003. It is tough when you are diagnosed later in life.

DX'ed with "Social Disabilities" along with DX of "Learning Disabilities" at age 9.

Now 30, and self DX'ed Asperger's. I think I am going to persue a professional DX. That way if I return to work, I may have some protection under the law.

Yes, do it! And when you get a job you don't need to tell everyone, just contact human resources and state that you would like to self-identify a condition.

just turned 25 and am not DXed

i started suspecting when i started working in a neuro lab last yr for school and i happened to see an article on autism laying about the common area...

i was dumbstruck.

i almost think it's bad to DX AS so early cause CLEARLY people show such a range of "traits" by the time they're older... i doubt you could predict these outcomes SO early on... and that is why adults have such a hard time getting DXed.

but it's good in a way, cause hey, if it gets you help when you're younger...

i don't know. i'm just ambivelant about DXs now. i've always known i was weird, but for some reason thought it would go away if i tried? but i'm more dealing with knowing that it's NOT gonna go away.

i don't know what good a DX would do me.

WOW, I disagree. The stims would probably be less meaningful, but I think people should try to get tested around 7 or 8. Apparently, most don't start to show social problems until like 5. They first found out about me at 6. BTW Older people are less likely to have evidence for a proper AS diagnosis, and more likely to have coping skills, etc... that may hide AS characteristics. I think at 7 or 8, everyone here might have said I have AS. NOW, I'm not so sure.

i guess im more thinking along the lines of: do we (ppl finding out about themselves later) really have AS or if it's something else. self-dx adults catch enough flack for saying they have AS and they're the ones who would know00cause like you said, adults prolly have better coping skills.

i totally agree with having a DX early if it helps you with school and financial support... i'm just not sure you can necessarily predict how this type of thing will manifest completely in adults on the spectrum as we clearly display a huge range of strengths and weaknesses... just seems you're more likely to miss-DX for some of the conditions that are more similar

i think i would be most happy with having an intial "umbrella dx" where you say "hey, this kid has something in the neighborhood of _____" and then keep up with treatment and evalations before settling on a concrete DX. i read so many times here on these forums of ppl saying i was first DXed this, then that, then this, then that... i don't know how hard it is to DX something and change it.

think that's all i mean.

and i still bout i'll ever go in for a DX as i dont know how it would help at this point

In 2004, around when I turned 31.
Can see both pros & cons to having been dx'd earlier (didn't happen to me)-was all new to me as an adult. Can't really imagine things being different (in the past or future) from the present.
