I know all Autism is different but I tell you, when my serotonin levels are high I'm social and my anxiety is reduced tremendously, I feel more trust in others and can talk to strangers including girls.. My face even looks different, like my eyes shine more and the weird down syndrome facial expressions are also reduced.

I have been using 5-hydroxytryptophan and for about a week I kinda experienced what's it like to be normal. Has there been any clinical studies regarding serotonin and Autism? I know they've said MDMA could be used as trial to reduce anxiety in Autistic people.

Now, this isn't the first time my symptoms are up and down but I think my case is a significant serotonin issue. Does anyone know how to make more serotonin and keep it up? My aspie symptoms all came back after I stopped taking 5HTP.

Um, well, I'm no doctor but many popular anti-depressants act to increase serotonin levels. They are usually referred to as SSRIs.

In addition to the SSRIs there are the Tricyclic Antidepressants, and the MAOI inhibitors. Also, eating carbs can temporarily increase Serotonin levels.

I'm on an SSRI....and I'm still autistic. 8O

The medication has its benefits, but it's Xanax which helps my tolerance increase.

I am trying a new anxiety med called Lexapro, new for me, before I was taking Fluoxetine the generic for prozac. Not sure if there is a link, but even when I am on meds, it does not feel like my anxiety is always completely gone.

yeah, either my body doesn't want to make serotonin, or it either blocks it or destroys it.

Serotonin is supposedly a major player in OCD if I remember correctly. Makes sense it would mess around with other conditions that involve perseveration.

I don't like Lexapro (Escitalopram) it has some nasty side effects for many, including me. I believe Fluoxetine is better--achieves the same results without the horrible effects if you miss a dose.

Good luck.

I've been on all sorts of different anti-anxiety, anti-depressants, etc and they've never done anything for me in a positive way. They've given me rage attacks, or they've made me a zombie, or just done nothing at all.

Ditto. Serotonin isn't my issue but modern psychology being what it is, that's the go to cause and cure for about any mental problem. Most people get an infusion of dopamine with social interaction and I'm pretty sure I only get cortisol. Aside from that I'm not really stressed or depressed or what have you, unfortunately the modern world is built on social activity.
