I have noticed that a cup of coffee doesn't always have an effect on me at all, but sometimes it can make me anxious, and sometimes sleepy.

Today I drank a cup of coffee, and my mind went blank - I was just staring at something, feeling detached. I got an urge to close my eyes, curl up and swing from side to side. I couldn't do that, because I was at café. For some reason, caffeine makes me stim. Sometimes it also causes some obsessive thoughts - I start thinking about one certain subject, and I just can't think anything else. It makes me anxious.

Why coffee sometimes affects me like this? Does anybody else have this problem?

I'm thinking back on it, but I think caffeine has a pretty standard effect on me. A bit of a boost. I don't drink coffee though, so I've probably never had that much caffeine at once.

I was reading the article linked in the thread on meds that drove an autistic kid insane.
The mother mentioned her kid used 12-15 cups a coffee a day and still felt sleepy.

Many people with ADHD do infact have a paradoxical reaction to stimulants and they could infact go to sleep after taking a stimulant.

I am a regular coffee drinker...but it is the sort of thing where it can make me go back to bed..or I can feel very cranky without it....but it does not really energise me persay...

um...but whenever I have Starbucks coffee, I feel as though I have been drugged...this weird messy cloudy feeling comes over me.

Yikes. Who knows what the heck is in that stuff.

I have a really weird reaction to the food from this once Chinese restaurant. Every time I hate there the reaction got worse. The last time I ate there (years ago) I lost all my emotions for like half a day. It was utterly bizarre. I couldn't feel ANYTHING, and I knew it was abnormal. Never felt like that before or since. Obviously that was the final straw and I quit eating there.

My mother used to give me soda when it was near bedtime because it would cause me to sleep. I do it on occasion with my son as well.

Exact opposite with benedryl or dimetapp type stuff for both of us as well, we both will be wired up for hours after taking it, lol.

Yeah people always say they get hyper from it.
But it seems it usually does verry little for me.
Ofcourse it differs from time to time.
But i definately cannot rely on it to become super active.
If i'm tired i fall asleep just as easily drinking redbull or not.

Caffeine seems to have a similar effect on me. Coffee and tea make me tired. I only feel really stimulated by sugar.

This is most likely due to MSG (monosodiumglutamate). It's a seasoning that is like a hyper dose of salt and will make a lot of people feel ill and possibly dull. Many Chinese restaurants no longer use this and will advertise that they don't. I never felt ill from it but my husband did-massively. It's not like eating rich food that makes you drowsy, but this wave of "duh" that progressively overcomes your whole being.

Coffee-I fight addiction to caffeine. I drink it all day long and depending on the strength, it can make me OD (irritable, paranoid, insomniac) or I can just be "happy and chipper".

You really think that's all it is? I've only had it to this one restaurant...but maybe they were using too much. Otherwise I tend to like crackers or snack food or whatever with MSG :D Yummy.

Come to think of it, this restaurant I use now advertises that you can have them withhold MSG, and usually my mom orders from there (and she doesn't think MSG is good for you).
