Hello all,
I have recently discovered the wonders of Skype for communicating with people. I have talked on Skype with people I've known online for years and found a whole new dimension open up in my friendship with them. Being able to hear people is so much more meaningful than just typing with them.
It gave me an idea. When I was in college, I used to go to Asperger's support groups and really enjoyed them. I enjoyed meeting others who were like me; people who I could relate to. I loved hearing their stories and discussing issues in my life with those who could understand.
So I figured, *why can't we do this on Skype?* I want to start a support group for people with AS on Skype. To start, I figure we would keep each group small, like 8-10 people so it is not too overwhelming. We would start by introducing ourselves, and then I would ask some discussion questions ("What is the hardest thing for you about having AS? What are some things that have helped? What one thing do you wish you could change the most? What do you like, if anything, about having AS?") and so on, and people would take turns answering and discussing.
It would be important to make sure people took turns so we are not all talking all over each other. Of course, there will be time for free discussion and for people to ask questions of others in the group.
I figure those of us who can't get to real life Asperger's support groups or social groups shouldn't be left out. We can have almost the same experience with Skype, in the comfort of our own homes! I am thinking to do this in the evening sometime, around 8 ET, but can adjust this to meet the needs of those who want to participate.
If you do not have Skype, but have a webcam or mic, downloading Skype is very easy, and the program is easy to use. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected] (no private messages, please) or post here the following things:
Name
Skype name
Preference for time to meet, city/state or country if applicable, and time zone
Email address so I can email everyone with updates if this becomes reality
Thank you for reading and I hope we can make this happen!
