I always wanted to be homeschooled, but it just wasn't possible due to my/my parent's schedules.

Sounds like just about the only way I could have grown up even more isolated and sheltered than I did, ensuring I'd remain even more ignorant and helpless about any kind of human interaction, and the trials of life in general, than I did when I reached adulthood.

I was homeschooled, and yes, that's exactly what happened.

Not all homeschooling is like that. It can let you interact with a greater variety of people (not all within 1 year of your age) and therefore develop more varied social skills. A lot of people think homeschooling has to be done at home, but really, it can be done anywhere.

In my case, though, a break from interaction was exactly what I needed after years of bullying at school. So I spent my homeschooling years (grades 7-9 and 11-12) hanging out in the university reading books. (Mostly books on medical genetics and psychology.)

Maybe back when you were a kid and the internet wasn't used by many. But in this age people can basically educate themselves from the internet. Kids just watch lecture videos from some place and purchase textbooks similar to the way an online course works. Then they just send their teachers their homework solutions via pdf.

An historical perspective:

The Internet, for most people, didn't start until about 1995. I was 34 years old then.

Before then, one had to rely on books and libraries for research. We had to use the "card catalogue" to obtain the needed books.

I still like the library. I use books as a resource a bit more than the internet.

I've considered it because school involves a lot of near sensory overload for me.
But I also think I operate better with the structure school offers.
Plus I'd rather not have my mom also become my school teacher.
I'd rather the roles of parent and teacher stay separate.

Your parent doesn't necessarily have to become your teacher, you could do it online.

My son is home schooled by me. He's a fellow Aspie, about to start year 11. Home education was the best thing for him and I wish I had been homeschooled too. Instead, I just skived a lot to avoid the unpleasantness of the school environment.
