i will eagerly talk about the weather but i have no interest in sport, so i think there is a distinction between those 2 examples.
I sort of enjoy the weather, but not sports. What really bugs me is when someone is talking to [me?] and then say "then" which implies that this conversation is going to go on forever. (The don't always say "then" it's sort of an example)
well i am interested in the weather for very many reasons, and i will go on for as long as i can about it. air systems are vast and very heavy and they strive to attain a tenuous equilibrium that results in fluctuations like ripples in pressure and humidity, and the whole thing swirls and boils in ways that are fascinating to consider..............
but most people just say "good to see the sun's out" or something, and that, i agree, is small talk because anything that could be a response to it is seen as pedantic.
example:
a: good to see the sun's out.
b: the sun is always "out", unless by "out" you mean extinguished. the sun always shines whether there are clouds that occlude it or whether it is night on whatever side of the world. the fact that there are no clouds today is due to a high pressure system that is responsible for higher temperatures that are trying to blow toward the peripheral low pressure regions, and taking the moisture there with them. it is interesting that..............
a: yes it's good like i said.
b: yep. good.
_____________
but sport is always a nauseating topic with me. i have no interest in learning about it or watching it or talking about it.
