It is often stated with psychologists that people with aspergers have a topic of interest that they will emerse themselves in.

Are there aspies out there who have many topic of interests? Is it uncommon for someone with aspergers to have no real in depth information about their topic of information.

Do some aspies not have a topic of interest? But share a possible fascination?

Any informtion appreciated.

I have many topics of interests.

Astronomy, drawing, photography, story writing, Harry Potter, History and Discovery channels, science, history, fantasy/sci fi, Doctor Who, Ben 10, etc.
I find I can only focus on one interest at a certain time. For example I've been reading Harry Potter and playing the video game for most of last week, before that I was writing a story and lately I've been getting back into Astronomy.
I have an ok long term memory with a few holes in it so I find I don't know every detail about my special interests. I have to go over the same information many times so it sticks. I had a bit of a reading comprehension problem in school. I have a good memory for pictures though.

And there have been some people with AS that have had no special interest at all.

Thanks penseive media seems to over rate the special topics in my opinion, that being narrowed to one field and knowing almost everything about it.

Its nice to hear it from someone else :)

Right - I tend to have serial interests - though most rely on perceiving patterns. And my filing system is far from perfect.

Right now, I'm interested in The Kinks and their personal life histories, the music and performers of the British Invasion era, healthy eating, vintage unisex clothing, WrongPlanet, the Internet, and Toastmasters.

I have a few. I've always loved skyscrapers and architecture in general, while at the same time I've always loved the weather, and also have loved statistics as well. Some other topics come and go as well, but yes to answer the question, I do have many different topics of interest.

I have many topics of interest too. I'm pretty much like Pensieve. I'm an AS female. I don't know if that makes much difference. But I read some where that it does.

Perhaps the emphasis is on the 'only focusing on one interest at a time.', as opposed to only ever having one interest. Certainly that's me, I hate it if I start reading a second book before I finish the first. Usually my life will be consumed with the one thing that I'm 'interested in' at the moment, which will likely change in a few months time. At the moment my interest is Asperger, having recently found out this describes me!

So may I modify the original question - are their aspies who have a focused interest in many things at the same time?

I'm obsessed with Johnny Depp movies, which is a fairly broad topic considering all the things he's starred in. I just love how he can change his voice, mannerisms and appearance to essentially "become" any character that he plays. He's incredibly talented, and handsome to boot. :)

That's still just one man. I can understand though. I used to like Tom Hanks and all his movies back in 1991.

Let's see.......

Music (performing and recording/mixing, playing keyboards, guitars, singing, listening, writing, compering.....most genres, though 60s pop fascinates me the most)

Photography (taking photos, messing with PhotoShop, digitising film negatives)

Gardening (edible plants only)

Interpersonal relations (creating, developing and keeping friends and partners)

Self-sufficiency (maximising independence from the brutal capitalist machine)

Politics (alternatives to capitalism, communes)

Writing (diaries, WP posts, developing a clear, concise and entertaining style)

Computing (messing with hardware and software)

Those are the main ones, but I dabble with a lot of things.....science, art, decorating, good films and TV programmes, comedy.....basically the universe and its entire contents. Not quite the classic Aspie narrow range of interests, is it?

I think that the special interests of AS females are more centred around celebrities, fashion and social affairs, but than that could be just me.

Toastmasters? I thought it was Routemasters? Or was it a typing error because you were hungry?

I've had a bunch of different interests throughout my life.. But i generally only have one at a time that takes over most of my focus, and the rest are sort of in the background. NTs seem to have this perfectly balanced way of integrating their interests into their lives, but i just get super-focused on a certain thing for awhile. I can't manage having very many big interests at once.

Yeah, you're right. Guess it's not such a broad topic after all. But that's pretty typical for us aspies. :) Tom Hanks is a good actor too. My dad and brother really like him, especially in Forrest Gump and The Green Mile.

My interest is linguistics at the moment. It's been biology, computer programming, and website design at various points throughout the past few years. And now I'm starting to slide into the more narrow realm of conlanging (making your own languages).
