Does it take you longer to get over it?

I mean when the infection is technically cleared up, or the illness is 'technically' gone, does it take you extra days to recover? I've always had what seems to be phantom illness for days afterward. Being sick is traumatic, it is so upsetting and I am curious if it's some sort of emotional or neurological response to the body being ill - that there's a like ghost pain that lingers and I need mental days beyond physical days to get over it.

Anyone else?

When I get a flu-like/cold-like illness, the fever, chills, etc. tend to go away after one day--but the cough can remain a couple of months.

I think it does. But for me it is almost a fear of it coming back for me though. And the length of time depends on what type and severity of illness. The flu (the sleeping, body aches, fever flu) won't take me too long. But odds are that I've been sleeping for days anyway. A stomach flu? A couple weeks before I return to normal.

Right now I'm trying to recover from pneumonia, and it has been the hardest yet. But my symptoms aren't quite cleared up yet either. I have multiple pulled muscles from the coughing fits. I think this particular illness will stay with me for a while.

I had pneumonia for a month and a half. Just starting to get over the cough now - that was 5 months ago.

Is that your first time for pneumonia?

I'm so sorry for the sickness - I've had problems with pneumonia my whole life. Was hospitalized several times as a kid and several more as an adult. It so sucks. (by the way, a fresh pineapple can help. It breaks up mucus. It contains bromelain. NOT canned stuff but cut up a real pineapple)

I think what I meant is that I have trouble knowing when my body is really ill or not - I can immediately tell when something is off but can't tell accurately how severe it is. Very high pain threshold. So I tend to go into a doctor and have other doctors gathering around saying "you've got to see this!" which is never a good thing :P And I've been asked more than twice if I actually drove myself there (because the problem was so bad)

But that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about times when you get down and sick and you feel awful and sad and sleep alot and all that and then you're well but you're still sort of in sick mode? Like once the transition is made to "I'm sick" you don't switch back right away?

I tend to have phantom symptoms for some time after and I think it's my brain slowly changing over back to well mode or something. I've had the doctor say "your infection is all cleared up!" and I'm still hurting. Then over a few days/week those phantom pains go away.

Either they are phantom pains, delayed transitions, or an echo of the illness that reverberates in our bodies, imo.

First diagnosed time, yes. It was suspected before, but the doctor didn't want to send me for a chest x ray (I don't think I had insurance). That time wasn't as bad as this time. I was a bit disoriented for a couple days, and my entire right side of my chest was in pain from the problems. It was mid lobe pneumonia, and I don't want to know what it feels like when it is in all three. It was horrible. I'm a big baby when it comes to, um, clearing out congestion and whatnot, and this was just disgusting. I got sick on the 11th, diagnosed on the 16th, and coughing up blood on the 18th from the fits being so violent. I stopped taking my thyroid meds because I couldn't keep track of them at all. I had to write down each and every dose because I couldn't remember what day and time it was. It was horrible.

My neck and shoulder have shooting pain in them. I have been treating with Ibuprofen and Tylenol, lots of hot showers, and ice compresses, which have just begun to help. Coughing has settled to a minimum, but I have started drinking every time I feel like coughing. Being off my thyroid meds has made me MORE tired than I normally would be, so I'm looking forward for that to be back to normal.

Not autism relevant.

it depends for me, anything relating to the stomach can take a week or so to fully recover even after symptoms have cleared

But flus and colds take less time, sometimes i dont even rest. part of being young

I recover fast when I am ill. And when I notice that people are affected by the flu, they stay at home. I am sort of affected too, but my eyes start to irritate a little and I start to sneeze, and that's it. I am still able to work.

I am less often ill (a week in a year) than the average. When I get pneumonia I need just a few days (way less than a week) to recover. And when I am ill, I tend to think what I can do, than what I cannot do.

For years I've lived in fear of getting a temporary illness that will force me to miss out on something like a holiday or some other event I'm looking forward to. It's happened before. I don't get sick often and it doesn't usually take me long to recover, but when I do it really sucks having to postpone going out to do something I enjoy doing because it's not like I get to go out and and enjoy stuff as much as most people my age do. I hate having to call people and tell them I can't go somewhere with them because I'm not feeling well. If it's something I need to do like groceries I feel guilty that I'm not really that sick with a cold and can do it as long as I try not to give my germs to other people and shouldn't be using it as an excuse since grocery shopping is not my favorite thing in the world, but too many other people go do this when they are really sick and get their germs everywhere, which I hate and is probably the reason I got sick in the first place. My parents will gladly get me my groceries if I call and tell them I'm not well enough to do it, but...
