I have special interests and obsession that keep getting me into trouble as I tend to argue about them and get frustrated.

Are they any easy ways to become desensitised to comments about Special interest or even to change special interests into something which is a positive.

Do you have special interests which are positive for you and which special interests would you suggest.

One thing I could get into is Photography, I have an interest in this, but not a massive one, perhaps I could really get into this, and learn to take some really good photos.

One of my special interests is film-making. Perhaps an interest in photography could evolve into that. I don't think that I've ever gotten into an argument over film-making.

I tend to get into a lot of arguments as well. It doesn't help that one of my special interests includes equal rights and I'm surrounded my people who constantly use homophobic, racist and ableist language. As for an interest that won't cause arguments...that's hard, but I believe the ones that will get you in the least arguments would be certain technologies, sewing, knitting, reading, carpentering and an interest in fossils. Hope that helps. :D

I don't really have any "special interests" ATM, instead I seem to have many no so special interests. Either way though I don't get into trouble with any of them and I've learned to not ramble about them in front of others. I had to learn that no one else finds my interests as interesting as me...Perhaps you could develop a special interest for "keeping up with the kardashians" that should keep most NT's on par with you

When I was a kid drugs were a special interest of mine and I didn't want to do anything but get high, so obvisouly that one got me into a lot of trouble with my parents lol but other then that I've never really got into fights over my interests...

On a side note, don't you guys feel like there's a lot of stigma around the term "special interests"? I hate, absolutely hate using the term because I feel like a lot of people use it to mock aspies. Just because we have a passion for what we are interested in doesn't make them special. Lot's of NT's are obsessed with sports or pop culture or gossip, do we call that their special interests? You feel me?...

My problem is twofold, as my one of my hobbies* (I'll use this term going forward) is the weather and weather forecasting.

So NT people are very interested in talking about it, all the time. I study weather charts online to forecast the weather (or used to) and now with all smartphones everyone has a weather app, so they think they know better.

So even though I have a better knowledge on this than most people, do to my I am unable to articulate it nicely, and I came across as a know-it-all.

Secondly, I get fed up of people moaning about the weather, it is what it is, and when I say things like it is better than average, as I compare actuals to long term. I fall in the trap of correcting people. Which again must be really annoying.

I just wish I had a hobby where people don't talk about it all the time, like fossils or dinosaurs.

The whole thing also makes me feel pathetic as grown up people have real issues to worry about.

@Crazyfool Perhaps you could develop a special interest for "keeping up with the kardashians" that should keep most NT's on par with you - not a bad suggestion.

My special interest in psychology has been a huge asset in working on a psychology degree. When 'play = studying', it's easy to do well in a subject.
