OK, one of the reasons I wanted to know why I was so "screwed up" or "different" (as I prefer) was because of a condition I obtained last year. It is called Alopecia Universalis, or so. For those who dont know, it basically means my white cells killed all my hair cells and attacked my nails (very weak, brittle, no issues with them since I trimmed them down).

Now, the thing is, what made me investigate myself was that I lost ALLLLLL my hair in 6 months, from leghair to eye brows to nose - All gone.. This didnt make me depressed, especially when I lost my eye brows (which is why most people become depressed over this "condition")

What interested me was 'Why' my white blood cells would attack my hair cells, just like that. 22 years went by and nothing then at 23 - 6 months and no more hair.. The difference between me and a bald person is that my hair follicles can STILL make hair, its just my white cells kill it..

I should get sick more often, as well, since I lost eye lash, ear hair, and nose hair defences against dust and germs, however, I havent been sick in 14 months! Thats going on a record for me (no flu shots) but I rarely got sick

My question is, why do YOU think my white cells attacked my hair? Everything happens for a reason and this doesnt add up to 'it just happened' because why not attack my skin or organs or etc? Aliens are bald and hair serves little purpose to us since we can control our environments. If this another stage in evolution? Is this a disease thats not exactly killing me or doing anything destructive?

P.S. I would not get a treatment for this:
1) No razors, no shaving cream, no shampoo expenses
2) No clogged drains with hair
3) Showering takes a fraction of the amount of time it used to - Drying even faster - pat down DONE!!
4) No more idle chit chat with hair dressers hahahah < -- BOOM!

Although, if I get a hair in my mouth, its gross because I know its not mine

I'm aspie and bald - nice loner combo eh?

Lucky. :x

Perhaps your imune system fought off something that looked, to it, like your hair follicles; and ever since then has been seeing hair as The Enemy?

Sometimes though when you have auto-immune disorder your immune system goes into hyperdrive and you don't get colds. Sometimes though when that happens your body increases the attacks on itself when exposed to a something.

Corvus --

Your post was really interesting. I guess I would feel sad about your alopecia, except you seem to be handling it so well. This is where Aspergers rules -- why get upset over something as stupid as physical appearance!

The end of your post was hilarious -- I especially liked the "I know the hair in the mouth can't be mine" . . . comment -- you had me laughing like crazy.

And aspergers plus bald would be a great combination for loneliness, except I don't hink it's going to work for you -- you're too funny. Like, REALLY funny . . . a very appealing trait. . .

So, is it going to be Olympic swimmer, top flight football referee, gangster chic,
or do you have your own "look" planned?

The immune system mis-targeting is not that rare, and can have much worse consequences than the admittedly very visible Alopecia Universalis.

Very often there's no clear reason found, but there is a tie-in statistically with being run-down and stressed.

I'm glad that you're taking it the right way.
If I were going bald or so, I'd just loose all the hair.
Hair is kind of gross anyway, not to mention all thing you've already mentioned.
Haven't heard of that disease before but it seems to not be such a big problem.

Since you're brave and sensible enough to joke about it, it sounds like your white blood cells joined the Ku Klux Klan.

Well, there has to be a positive side for everything. Looks like you have figured it out. At least you don't get sick very often. :)

The best way to show everyone that life isnt over is by enjoying being alive!

That and studying why things happen.

Thankful I've got most of my hair, but in recent years I've had "alopecia areata". Quarter-sized bald spots on my scalp, which grow back after many months. I'm female, and never had this growing up-only been since I turned 30. No clumps of hair come off, I shed often but only one hair at a time. People have guessed it could be caused by stress (though being alive inherently=stress, in my book) or malnutrition (I can't eat most foods)-but there are no provable answers, alas. I hide it with strategic barette placement-glad my boyfriend knows & doesn't mind.

One of a list of "reasons I am an alien"when I was a kid....was very little body hair,I had a lot of head hair but was told that it tangled so much because the hair folicols were so thin.

How does this,or does this at all, effect your tactile or other sensitivities?Inspite of little body hair or because of it,I have very sensitive skin to light touch thing(like a hair brushing across my cheeck, which creeps me out....and you dont have to worry about)

I can see your point about the uselessness of body hair in most human cultures. It was once used to help our bodies with temperture but most of us live in controlled temp environments. It was also used to help hold "personal scent" ....we know how popular that is in todays society.(though I personally love "some" body scents.)

As far as the immune system....I believe there has been some research into autism being triggered(in part) as an "immune response" very similiar to MS.My boyfriend has MS and he never gets sick(inspite my desperate attempts to infect him...I kid)

I hope you maintain your positive attitude.(And if the aliens return for you soon, will you tell them to PM me ,if I can bring my cats with? Thanks)
