Half the things I say or jokes that end up being awkward are just because I am trying to fit into normal conversation, because if I don't say or make them then I am criticized or labeled as odd or a robot or people just find me odd and ostracize me from then on.

A lot of the time people seem to attack me I have the sense not for what I actually said, but for what they think I said or what they think I am thinking or what they assume my position is mentally on an issue or they extrapolate wrongly and assume they know my life story.

I have learned to stay silent especially on very emotional or controversial topics. For even if I offer a position that agrees with a speaker my word choice or phrasing leads to me being attacked. In political discussions I am attacked as a rabid right winger, and a rabid left winger by different people when I am neither.

Once a perceptive fellow participant told me one of the problems was my word choice, they said they noticed I was not using the correct words or phrasing to indicate which party I followed. So even if I was contributing a strong left wing position, I was inadvertently using words or phrasing that tipped others off I was actually right wing which caused the verbal attack because they assumed I was their political enemy.

It makes me not want to discuss anything at all, but then I am pegged as weird and all the negative stuff that follows attaches to me.
