Does anyone else get this?

What I mean is, I've been told by people that if they talk to me about something serious, sometimes I don't seem to grasp or understand the severity of the situation or how they feel because of it. Like for example, someone may tell me something and I will ask a question about it, but not the right kind of question, or sometimes I ask too many questions rather than trying to comfort the person or helping them

Yep...it happens to me sometimes. I feel bad because of it.

Sometimes, I like to convey the humorous side of things when more solemnity is required.

Sometimes I don't have the appropriate emotional response. Maybe it's because I'm still collecting information about the event and haven't had a chance to react to it. This could just be slow processing (or non-processing?).

I tend to go to either extreme, wherein I either experience or hear about something quite horrific and have no emotional reaction, or at least not the emotional reaction expected of me, OR, I entirely overreact like a runaway train down a mountain. The overreaction tends to occur with anyone in a position of superiority over me, like a relative, teacher, police officer or in the distant past, boss.
