I had severe meltdowns as a child... as an adult I've been diagnosed with various things including schizoaffective, anxiety and borderline personality. Under stress, I scream, I yell, I throw things, severe sensory issues etc... symptoms that resemble an adult meltdown. Now after probably over 20 medication changes over a span of 3 years (some of these due to severe side-effects, it turns out I'm really sensitive to medication), mental health realizes my problem manifests no matter what medication I am on, though they are still keeping me on the medication I am already on, they say that the problem's solution is therapy. Based upon my symptomology, I would admit bipolar is probably in the mix somewhere, but there is lack of acknowledgement of any autistic symptomoloy. They want to put me through DBT therapy, is this correct for the situation?

I also have been heavily medicated for my aspie symptoms. This is wrong, as autism can't be cured.
What is DBT?

DBT is a type of therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder. I went through some of it, it's a therapy that treats things such as impulsive behavior, interpersonal relationships and stuff like that. The parts I went through involved using your "wise mind" to make correct decisions and also the correct way to say no or request things from other people.

Your situation has some similarities to mine - different diagnoses, but the same theme of being drugged by incompetent doctors for years, and suffering from severe (in my case permanent) side effects.

DBT or Dialectical Behavior Therapy can be beneficial, but only if the therapist is ready and willing to acknowledge that their colleagues, other mental health professionals, have played a huge role in your trauma. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of therapists aren't willing to do that, with the inevitable result being a further compounding of their clients' trauma.

Having finally been to someone who specializes in diagnosing ASD, she told me that most doctors don't know jack s**t about ASD, so misdiagnoses, incompetence, being ignored repeatedly by physicians are all common. If you want an ASD diagnosis, don't just ask Joe Blow doctor for a diagnosis of ASD, you have to seek out someone who specializes in that area.
