So I am going to do psychological testing in 4 days. Apparently are insurance will not pay for all of the tests, so we told the psychologist to pick the 8 tests (because the insurance will only pay for 8 ) she think will be best for figuring out a diagnosis for me. I had a interview with her a couple weeks ago and we are focusing on aspergers and maybe nvld as a possible diagnosis. She said that IF she cannot get a diagnosis from the testing, we will either have to wait a year, or go down a different route. I know many of you have done psychological testing for aspergers and I am wondering in your opinions, do you think 8 tests will be enough? Obviously you can't say for sure but estimates are appreciated. I cannot bear having to wait for a diagnosis any longer and the possibility of having to wait even longer scares the crap out of me. But do be honest with your answers, thanks! :D

I am concerned that she seems to be relying completely on testing.

Well my parents had a hour interview with her and so did I one on one, so she would be judging it off the testing and the interviews. And they gave me a thing for 2 of my teachers to fill out

There was once a TV show in the 1970s-1980s known as "Eight Is Enough."

My guess is those will be as big an influence as the formal tests. Also, when I was tested for flunking Spanish repeatedly in college, it was a full day. They finally focused in and determined it was an Auditory Processing Delay. That's a very specific malady that can be measured, though. Years later when my daughter and later I went through testing for AS/ASD, NVLD, etc.. the tests were much closer to self reporting.

So IMO, I think that if she is good, and well familiar with autism spectrum variations eight tests would be sufficient - to rule out other possible causes or co-morbid conditions. The rest she should be able to do on her own.

From the interview I had with her she seems pretty familiar. Considering the last few months of my life have been 60% of just researching Aspergers, that's saying something lol.

If it changes your answer at all, she said they would be doing tests to determine my emotional, social, and congitive functoning.

As long as the psychologist picks her tests carefully, eight should be plenty. I received eight tests total, but one had nothing to do with autism (I was simultaneously being tested for dyscalculia.) The ADOS is the major one for looking at autism symptoms, but even it isn't required. There are plenty of people here who never received it. Don't worry, I'm sure everything will go fine.

Some of the tests may be to see the severity of disability. In the DSM V diagnosis, they not only need to show you meet the diagnostic criteria, but also to rate what degree of support is needed.

Apparently not all of the tests are dedicated to autism, does this change the probability?

Do you have to wait a year or is it per calendar year? By the time you get an appointment, do all that testing you are probably about a month away from the next calendar year anyway.

The person I am getting assessed by puts far greater emphasis on interviews than testing.
