OT? Occupational Therapy?

What exactly is the brushing for? I sometimes like rub my arms/hands. As for brushing, the closest I come is combing which I do rarely.

I have heard of dry body brushing for lymph drainage that people do before they take a shower it is supposed to imporve circulation and skin tone..that is the only body brushing i have heard of...here is some info on it though....I have tried this...it seems like it couldn't hurt..but just for general health..and not a behavioural thing...

Yes, I do. I use a common store-bought veggie brush. But - do it softly or you'll scrape yourself too hard. And, no, I had no idea this was an OT thing or that anyone else did this. I just it was a peculiar habit/fetich I had. Brushing is calming/soothing. I guess you could use a soft hair brush too.

Believe it or not, a gentle brushing as we spoke of is a documented stim!

Only know of it from what I've read (I have many hyper-sensitivities). "The Wilbarger brushing protocol" is what I'm guessing you're describing. Books (such as "Too loud too bright too fast too tight" by Sharon Heller) say its to treat/lessen sensory defensiveness. You could do online search of the terms Wilbarger protocol + brushing, I've no firsthand experience/knowledge.

We used this on all of my children. We used a surgical brush and brushed their backs arms and legs and then had to compress their joints. It is supposed to be enough to bring their sensories back in order. It worked sometimes. On my youngest child he has now learned to actually take the brush if we give it to him and brush his hands. As far as whether you can do it at home, I wouldn't see why not. They had us doing it every 2 hours. We are trying other sensory things like weighted vests, but I don't know if they make a difference or not. Any advice on what else to use would be good to know. As far as it being stimming, I am still learning all of this. I am actually learning the most informative information from WP, not the doctors or therapists! So thank you!

Oh, I shall add this to the list!

For the above question about stimming: I sway over my lab bench rthymically (sp?) - I'm a scientist/chemist. Stimming is comforting plus it keeps my balance. I also use a digital metronome with a visual pendulum, which I use to pace myself....just a lab pet fetish, I think.

WOW, you are DEDICATED and precise! I think I do it 1 to 4 times a second sitting,(I think it is always about 4 times a second if it is just my upper body.) and about 2 times a second standing. It usually isn't to maintain my balance though. It is either going with the flow, so to speak, or comforting. I don't try to time it though!
