why turn the community into attempt to grab politcal power. Force the state deal with issues most important to those on the spectrum. make nts make accomandations for aspies.

What issues are most important to those on the spectrum?

If you look at the pages on wikipedia, you'll notice that "autism community" refers to the NTs that are involved in advocating for autistics. The "autistic community" refers to the autistics themselves.

I'm not sure if there is any political point of view here, maybe somebody can do a poll to find out.

But I do think that if we were politically organized we could maybe get disability benefits or something.

Also it might just help raise awareness of The Condition so NT's could understand how to relate with us better.

More of us could talk about it openly. Pretty soon Hollywood celebreties would be going on Oprah to talk about their AS, and just stuff like that. It would be fun.

I think aspies need to be recognized as a true disability and there needs to be specific government disability programs to give aspies real support. Maybe an aspie disability insurance fund and an aspie employment advocacy program, so aspies can economically enjoy a level playing field. We also need an aspie protection program because aspies are targeted disproportionately by preditorial groups and individuals because of their social vulnerabilities.

However that in itself may make us targets. If we are so publically labeled, those of lesser moral standards will find a way to exploit us. There's always someone out there looking for weaknesses to exploit.

Gays maybe out number people on the spectrum 10 to 1 and you can see what luck they have had with getting gay marriage legal in the US. Socio-economically gays tend to be better off than the average American and aspies likely tend to be worst off. So it all amounts to people collectively on the spectrum do not have much power.

1% of the population that is already seen as mentally disturbed, is going to make political gains. Oh yeah, that will happen.

This is all true, but also by fighting for what they want and making it a public issue they have gained more understanding and acceptance from the public, so now they have more "safe zones" where they don't have to be afraid.

But I think our issue is more closley related to the movement for rights for people with physical disabilities. 20 or 30 years ago you didn't see as many wheelchair ramps, and handicap accessible restrooms, and there wasn't as much public awareness of the issue. People in wheelchairs deserve respect and so do we.

In both cases the groups made gains by fighting for them.

They're called politicians....aren't they mentally disturbed by power/greed when compared to everyone else?
