I don't want a formal diagnosis, but I think AS explains a lot about me. I wouldn't want a formal diagnosis, however, because everything about me would be judged on that basis. I have overcome a lot since my childhood. I don't want to return to the days when I was judged as inferior.

Faith, it isn't so much that you have something, but it is the way you are. And if you don't want to be the way your are, then that creates all sorts of problematic psychological states such as self-loathing. You have to think about it in terms of a difference - not a disease. You can adapt to it and get on with life, maximizing your strengths and gaining skills to navigate the social world more easily.

I'm sure that, given the choice, I would have picked being NT over Aspie. But of course I'm completely happy with my present self and I WOULD NOT change it for the world!!

Who the hell would want a life full of confusion and strife? I see nobody here who WANTS AS, but many who do want validation and acceptance, something most of us do not have the luxury of experiencing on a daily basis.

You're lucky to have been diagnosed at a young age, as my middle daughter was...Many of us in the older generation did not have that opportunity, no access to services and/or therapies that might've helped us overcome some of the many difficulties associated with AS. That is what I am seeking now. My ex-shrink had already stated that I most likely do have AS, but she, unfortunately, was an incompetent tool, incapable of giving me the help I need.

I hope and pray every day that I will eventually find it within myself to overcome my severe social anxieties, sensory problems, among other things, so that I may drive, work, and be a better wife and mother.

If I could have chosen I'd probably have wanted to be NT, but I wouldn't change anything now.
I think a lot of people who aren't diagnosed but think they might have AS don't necessarily want to, they've just found an explanation for why they are the way they are. I know that'/s how I felt between founding out about AS and getting a diagnosis anyway, I didn't want to have it but it was juust a relief to know why I was different for once :)

I hate having Asperger's and would give anything to make it go away. I think of it as a disease and not something anybody would want. I've only known I've had it for two months though, so maybe my opinions will change after I have come to terms with it.

If you took away Asperger's from your personality you'd lose both the negative and positive aspects of it. Ypu'd be a completely different person. Or at least that's the way I see it. Although I admit I would do anything to get rid of all the problems I have because of it. I still wouldn't want to change who I was though.

I don’t wish; nor do I would a, should a or could a; it either is or it isn’t, it either happened or it didn’t, anything else is acknowledging the non-existent.

I am who I am how I happened, anything else isn’t me nor would I exist if I were anyone but who I am right now; and I don’t want to be anything other than me. Wishing to be someone else is wishing for death…. It doesn’t mean you have to like who you are. It doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help to improve the quality of your life. It also means a lot of positive things…. We can’t be [collectively] defined by a single flaw, a million flaws and one perfect outlier or no flaws at all; no one can define us other than ourselves, and even then we lose accuracy due to peoples’ expectations for us (i.e., is it hard for “you” to live, or is it hard for others to “live” with you?).

You are beyond unique, the odds of you being who you are when you are is incomputable, and you want to completely change that to the non-existent…the lie? That’s ludicrous….

My As has given me abilities that have allowed me to become quite successful. If you took away my AS I would be a different person and I don't think I would like that person.

I think the best option for me would be staying how I am, but in a society which is geared more towards people with AS, rather than catered for NTs; the problems that arise from having AS aren't always a direct cause of it, but from social expectations.
