Do you find it hard to tell what a song is about?

I find songs extremely difficult to decipher. I have never found out what a song without searching the answer on the internet.

I also find it very difficult to understand what an episode of a TV show is about if things aren't explicitly stated, like emotions and what characters did.

I wonder if this has anything to my ASD. Do any of you relate to me?

Yes I often have to look up a song's meaning online so that I understand it completely.

I can't understand what a song is about most of the time, or hear the lyrics. I try to look up the meaning and lyrics sometimes aswell (even, then I might not understand ). You're not alone.

Same thing with me, I find it hard to understand what songs are about.

I didn't understand the lyrics, nor even listen for them, when I was a child.

Now, I have a basic understanding of lyrics. But I'd have to read a Bob Dylan song, rather than listen to it, in order to be able to understand it.

In most cases I would have to look up the lyrics online if I want to understand them.

All the time. Then I learned about Auditory Processing Disorder.

Many times a song references something in the artists personal life so most people will not get it, or listeners mistakenly think the song is about something meaningful in thier life. Artists for the most part are happy a song has meaning to the listener. An exception is misinterpreting a political meaning.

Some songs are easy for me to understand. But I usually read YouTube comments or look up song meanings on Google to understand what a song means.

I can never derive the meaning of lyrics or poetry unless it's blatantly obvious/ comedic.

I also struggle with writing lyrics. I have plenty of songs that I haven't finished because I can't write them.

Nuances, symbolism, veiled references etc....I don't get most of that stuff. I go to song facts a lot.

If given the lyrics, would you be able to find out what the song is about?

Yep. Which is usually a good thing, keeps the song "alive," in a sense. It may be interpreted by the listener as relating to a certain area of their life or experience and therefore they'll relate with it. The meaning when written may be entirely different. I got stuck on "how to save a life," by the Fray, for example, having a lot to do with recovering addicts/alcoholics. It could very easily be interpreted influenced by that shade. Look up the meaning and the songwriter came up with it in response to a troubled teenager at a mentoring camp.

Most of the time I understand them but sometimes I have no clue. Like that song Skinny Love, I have NO IDEA AT ALL, what the heck she's singing about. And I had no idea what the song She's A Brick House meant until my brother explained it to me. I think I preferred not knowing what that song meant.

It's difficult, especially with songs in a foreign language.
