You gotta recognise the fact that there's a certain versatility to this word.

- It can be manipulative, as in showing that extra measure of politeness can go a long way in getting what you want.

- It can be plain polite, a favourite of people who don't want to sound rude when requesting things.

- You can use it to be slightly snarky. "Oh, please. "

How many other words can you think of that can be both rude and polite? Or under-the-radar-manipulative? For these reasons I like "please". 8)

This works for me.

I think basic rules of politeness are very useful. They are easy to learn and useful across a broad variety of contexts.

"Excuse me." Very useful for basic politeness. Also good in the other ways you mention for please.

"Thank you"

"Would you mind if...:

"Sorry to trouble you, but..."

I find these conventional words and expressions extremely useful, particularly in situations when not using them would require coming up with some original conversation.

LOL...."Pu-leeze" is than just a "little" snarky.

I never even saw the word "snarky" until about 2005 or so.

I think it's used primarily in an internet context.

Agreed. Perhaps I'm using such words too much though, but rather too much than too little. I think everyone deserves decent treatment, at least as long as they stay kind.

I also like the word Please. It shows that people are willing to go the extra mile to show their manners.

I don't think that's right. I certainly heard in the 1970s.

Oh, please.

(OED cites the word as dating back to around 1906, then meaning "irratable". :) )

Politeness is the most useless thing ever invented. We should be allowed to address everyone the same way.

I see it as currency in a conversation.

Politeness is an efficient way of managing a broad range of social transactions with people you don't know well.

If you don't understand this, daily life is going to be very hard for you and you will frequently be treated badly by people.

There are other dimensions to this, but strictly from a self interested perspective, this is something that you should study and learn to use.

Depending on your language, you have to be familiar with various degrees of politeness. In Romania, adults who don't know each other well address each other with a specific pronoun and the second person plural form of the verb.

I guess I'll have to stand corrected. I thought wrong. It happens to the best of us.

Still fighting back on it and using every conceivable way to try and justify your desires on this.

Every culture has a polite way of doing things.

I have been to many countries/cultures and the one thing they all appreciate is any attempt to use polite terms in their culture and language. No matter how bungled the attempt may be. YOU are reaching out to THEM. If you do not wish to participate, then fine, it is your prerogative.

It serves a purpose whether you like it or not. It is a social construct that puts those that wish to participate in a better light. And, for me, it establishes a set of rules to follow so that everyone that IS participating have at least a starting point.

Doesn't always work though. But, at least I've tried to do what is needed to function in the real world.
