Susanne Atanus says Autism is god's punishment
Republican Who Said Autism Was Result of God’s Anger Over Gay Marriage Will Run for Congress Again

Susanne Atanus (below), the Illinois Republican who told a newspaper in 2014 that God put autism and dementia on Earth as punishment for marriage equality and abortion, lost her bid for Congress that year.
But she’s going to try again anyway, even if the Republican Party wants nothing to do with her.
“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus said. She said she believes God controls the weather and has put tornadoes and diseases such as autism and dementia on earth as punishment for gay rights and legalized abortions.
Atanus’ comments were so despicable that GOP officials asked her to drop out of the race. It didn’t work. She won her primary, lost the race to Democrat incumbent Rep. Jan Schakowsky, and the Republicans lost a chance to pick up another seat in the House.
I guess I should be thrilled, then, that Atanus announced she’ll run again next year:
Susanne Atanus filed petition signatures Monday to get on the ballot as a Republican candidate in the 9th Congressional District.
Cook County GOP Chairman Aaron Del Mar says someone with the party will “for sure” challenge Atanus’ petitions in an attempt to get her removed from the race.
“We will not support her at all,” Del Mar said. “We don’t want anything to do with her.”
That’s right. They won’t support her. They’re too busy supporting the candidates who think Mexican immigrants are rapists, that Joseph built the pyramids in order to store grain, and that being gay is a choice. Given the Presidential candidates in the Republican Party, Atanus is hardly out of place on the Right. “God did whatever idiotic thing I’m about to say next” is practically their slogan.
Schakowsky, I assume, is thrilled at her entrance into the race.

Well, if this lady really did say, "God put autism and dementia on Earth as punishment for marriage equality and abortion", then it is a poorly thought out and ignorant comment.
Autism and dementia and many other mental disorders and handicaps have existed back in Jesus's time, and even before. Though, I think chemicals, and other environmental factors, including genetic mutation and degradation might be helping to increase those numbers.
Jesus had to correct His disciples when they were jumping to similar conclusions one time concerning a blind man:
John 9:1-3 - As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
You could replace "blind" with autistic, dementia, paraplegic, schizophrenic, etc. Because this often seems to be the case.
I am not referring to homosexuality, and related issues. I am merely showing that even Scripture pokes holes in such logic. Politicians have a lot of repenting to do before they can go around boldly proclaiming what God has and has not done in terms of punishment. Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, ALL of them!
I think the scripture I posted also means that Autism and other disorders in a way are a gift from God. And God has a perfect plan and reason for each individual in that situation. Perhaps God wants to see if some parents will love their children, even if their children don't fit the parents expectations on how they should be. Will we love those who are not capable of caring for themselves? Do we have that kind of compassion in our hearts and lives?
I am a Christian, and some would say, "right winger", but I just don't believe that autism is a punishment for what this "republican" politician lady said. She seems to have a very negative view of autism and disabilities, and I also would not want to associate with people of that outlook.

I think it is not her place to judge, and the experts amongst you might be able to find scriptural evidence for that. Interestingly, my sense is that Islam would back me to the hilt on this point.
My sense of Divinity notes the available wordplay in her name. Not to mention the shades of meaning available in some of the anagrams of her name.
Let me get this straight, I am punished by God for someone else being gay, nice to know God is fair in this matter.
Thats sarcasm if you can't tell, I think autism and dementia has been around before gay rights were even a thing. It seems like we had dementia back in the days when homosexuality was illegal.

Hehe, pretty much my thoughts about this.

Just how wrong of me is it to say one of her autistic constituents should blindside her with a hug?

So the god she worships is Zeus (or Baal?). What is it about the United States that they seem to produce such an extraordinary number of utterly insane religious zealots?
Or Thor, which would mean in her vernacular that she's clearly a neo-Pagan like me.
I usually vote for Ceres. She wants us all not to starve.

I really wonder that too. Why is religious fundamentalism and its narrowminded stupidity so common in the USA compared to other OECD Western countries?

Uh, guys, have you read scripture?
Matthew 5:45 - so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
First of all, notice that Jesus is claiming that God causes "good" and "bad" weather to happen to ALL people, and NOT just gay, autistic, dementia sufferers, etc. We ALL are subject to bad weather. Does not necessarily have to mean God's judgement.
And Christianity is not the only "religion" that supports the notion of God controlling the weather. Judaism, Islam, and even various so called pagan religions worship some "god" or deity that controls weather or some parts of nature. There are left-wing individuals who also believe such things, and any combination thereof. So theologically, this is a very common belief to hold.
I personally find no problem with the thought of God controlling the weather. It's not really narrow minded or stupid at all. After all, don't some people blame mankind for causing global warming?
So if an omnipotent God exists, how much more control does He have over the weather than such small frail creatures like ourselves?
The problem is when someone claims God is bringing about tornadoes as judgment for such and such list of things. You've got to ask, "How in the world do you know that? Because tornadoes and catastrophic weather patterns have been happening even when homosexuality was outlawed, and long before Jesus's ministry on Earth".

I don't know, it depends on what your definition of "religious fundamentalism" is. These terminologies seem to change or mean something different from person to person.
Please tell me, what does OECD mean? I'm not really the best with figuring out acronyms.
