Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has any experience with the process of getting an adult Asperger's diagnosis in Scotland (Edinburgh in particular)? Thinking about talking to my GP about it, but find talking about myself very difficult. Just want to get an idea of what I might be letting myself in for if I do decide to seek a formal diagnosis.

Thank you.

There are a few Scots who post here but I'm south of the border, some/most of this should be relevant. My opinions based on personal experience and reading here on this site.

You need a sympathetic GP to get anywhere, opinions on AS seem to vary as much as in the general public. Diagnosis services are generally focussed on children. Most GPs have limited knowledge about AS, some seem to see diagnosis as irrelevant, and that a person should just tough it out. GPs are often far more willing/interested in treating additional, co-morbid details such as anxiety or depression.

You need to check if there is actually an adult diagnosis service available, this seems to vary by area and may be provided by the NHS or by the local council. In some areas there is no funding provided for adult diagnosis, so no service provided. The person doing the assessment, if available, should ideally be experienced in the subject rather a general duty clinician. If you are female, there is a potentially higher chance that your symptoms will be over looked.

It's best to ask yourself why you would want a diagnosis, accommodations for work or studies, claiming benefits, do you just need to know? There will be very little support after a positive diagnosis, you may be offered CBT, or something similar.

If you do chose to pursue a diagnosis, be prepared, especially important if you are not comfortable with talking about yourself. Do some research, write out or print off why you feel that you identify with AS, what traits you feel have an impact on your life.

There are also private services available but costs seem to vary widely. I am sure I saw a Scottish member post about their private assessment costing £500, around £2000 seems to be much more common figure.

Personally, my experience with doctors on the subject has been poor, sorry if the above seems bleak reading.
