I never understood pretend play.

I like to make up fictional characters. I'll look at, say, a list of names and give them all personalities and interests and imagine how they would interact with each other. Most of my characters have one or more mental disabilities, as that is my special interest.

I have imaginary friends who play with me. They walk in the park and do sports with me and sometimes they color with me or play with my toys with me.

As a cleaner at a care home I sometimes try to imagine the care home as a secondary school. So as I'm cleaning, in my head the bedrooms aren't bedrooms but are classrooms instead, the dining hall is the school cafeteria, etc, and there are hundreds of imaginary teenagers in the classrooms and the corridors. It sometimes helps me to not get too overwhelmed if I use my imagination. Unfortunately, though, I forget about it as the day goes on. Also I forget which wing is which area of education. Maybe I could write it down and keep it in my pocket, but that's taking it too seriously, don't you think? :)

All my life I've interacted with assorted imaginary places and people and have made maps, stories and the like. Names and emphasis changed over the years but I still have my imaginary worlds and my pretending to turn to.

That's why I got on so well with my half-sister when she was growing up, and today I like to build houses and stuff for my niece's toy animals and dolls, just like I did when my sister was her age.

I like the idea of imaginative play, but I couldn't imagine roleplaying as someone who isn't anything like me. It's hard enough for me to put myself in someone else's shoes, but to pretend I'm something completely different from what I am? I just can't see myself doing that.

I could see myself being a spell-flinging mage in a fantasy setting, and maybe playing around with other abilities I don't have in real life, but I couldn't see myself playing a character with a different personality, morals, etc. I'd be a Mary Sue, but you know what, for things like D&D, I don't see what the problem with that is. I mean, isn't each character on D&D supposed to be an avatar of the person playing them?

I did. Sometimes I did too well.

Unless if I don't know what am'I supposed to do, or no role at all.

I've enjoyed role playing games, both the tabletop and live action versions. One thing I love about being an aunt is being able to play with my niece.
