Asperger's but okay nonverbal stuff?
I have an official diagnosis, but I sometimes question it. I have hypersenses, obsessive interests, a lack of social and/or emotional reciprocity, poor social skills, a fascination with objects, inflexible routines that I have to follow, and stims.
Socially, I don't understand my peers, what they want to hear, and their motivations. I say weird things at the drop of a hat and have SA. I have offended people before with my bluntness; I am very blunt, though I can lie if I have to. I also tend to take things literally, but with such a sarcastic mother, I soon learned to guess again.
I didn't brush my hair until ninth grade due to sensory issues.
Now here's the problem: my nonverbal communication is only slightly below average. Only once or twice a year do I have a serious slip-up, more than average, but nonverbally, I am intuitively close to "normal". Basic things like negative and positive emotions on people I can tell you, but taking such cues out of context, I have no idea what the person is communicating unless it's, like, they're crying.
Yet I can give/interpret most body language, and my voice and eye contact are normal. I know I qualify for Asperger's, and my new psychiatrist and psychologist agree, but do I have ASD?
I often feel guilty talking about my AS. What if I'm lying?
As you probably know, Aspergers manifests itself in different ways in different people. Some people might not have sensory issues, but are impaired in understanding nonverbal communication. You might be the other way around.
No person with Aspergers has ALL its symptoms. Stop beating yourself over not having a certain symptom. You are not lying. You just might be an Aspie who has strengths in discerning nonverbal communication.
You may not be aware of how much nonverbal social cues you are missing and picking up. If your not missing any nonverbal social cues then great! it means your adapting and learning. I didn't know about body language until after i was diagnosed, the concept did not exsist to me until i was taught about it.
Its probably just one thing your good it, If you have been fully assessed then you probably have aspegers but if it bugs you a lot then ask a specialist.

I have no trouble with facial expressions, tone of voice, not much trouble with humor (except often I can't tell if someone is joking or serious), I use and understand sarcasm (except for subtle sarcasm) and I understand body language (I think!)
But I was diagnosed with ASD. I feel the same way as far as worrying it's not correct. But I struggle a lot. And I've learned so much since I was little. I didn't even use facial expressions really as a little kid, and now I do.
And I have a lot of other issues that have nothing to do with socializing that fit perfectly with the diagnosis.
Apparently girls and women tend to learn to adapt socially and often have less obvious social problems on average.
