My 12-year-old son has asperger's. He has some of the most beautiful idiosyncracies that are associated with asperger's, such as sleeping with weight on his chest, making no eye contacts, and flapping his hands, etc.

Anyway, he also is petrified of birds. I wonder if that's something others with Asperger's may share.

I don't like birds - they have weird eyes and are too unpredictable. I don't think it is an Aspie thing per se - but could be just the unpredictability of their movements. I think that is why I also am hesitant of dogs too. They like to jump and run around. Cats on the other hand tend to be more purposeful in their interactions.

I quite like birds actually. I get nervous if there's one flying near me though, so that could be it.

It could be an event (or a story) with a scary bird that has triggered this. My son was once afraid of owls because he read a scary story about them. I like birds very much, particularly parrots.

I have no fear of birds whatsoever.

But spiders freak me out something fierce.

Sorry that your son is so afraid of birds.

Dunno about birds (I quite like watching them, actually), but anything slimy, like slugs or snails, is really enough to make me walk in the opposite direction. Ugh...

I know someone who was terrified of butterflies and other flying insects. Not an aspie, but I just thought it was an interesting fear.

I was when I was his age and younger. The thing I was worried about was the beaks. I thought all birds' beaks were razor sharp and capable of pecking out chunks of flesh and making anyone they attacked bleed to death as they flailed about helplessly. And I don't even ever remember seeing Hitchcock's "The Birds" or anything else like that. It just somehow occurred to me independently that maybe those sharp pointy things have the hardness and shear strength of heat-treated steel, and that a bird - any bird - is just waiting for a chance to use it on you.

I'm fascinated by birds especially ducks. We all have these little quirks I guess.

I am not afraid of them, actually, but I do notice that things that swoop and fly and do otherwise unpredictable motions make me very nervous. Once I went to a butterfly museum, and was embarrassed to find that I definitely did not like having them land on me, or fly too close. I had to leave the room rather quickly, as I couldn't stop making defensive motions with my hands. I also don't like flying frisbee's, basketballs or beach balls, or any other randomly moving object that might hit me. Oh, yes, I saw "The Birds" when I was about ten years old. Scarred me for life! :) Actually, it just made me more nervous for a long time.

No fear of birds or most animals in general.

LOL about the butterflies. I like them in the wild but not when I saw them in a butterfly house - it was kind of like a giant tent-like enclosure. It bothered me too and I went outside and waited for everyone else.

I love birds. What I really can't stand are little critters that can crawl along your skin. They make me want to scream.

We aspies are strange. We can be able to deal with stuff that would seem dangerous, but afraid of harmless things - like butterflies. We are all alike in general but different in specific.

Spiders! Oooom! I want to kill them with a scoped rifle from at least 100 yards. I kinna stand the speedies man!
