Does reading out loud ever help you focus better on the text?

This doesn't seem like an autistic trait, and in fact considering a lot of autistic people prefer to learn in ways other than via auditory information, seems maybe more neurotypical or allistic.

Would be interesting to know if any of you still do this though and why?

I used to read out loud (should try it again) when I took voice and acting courses. I don't feel the need to do it to help with reading comprehension so much, but it does help with public speaking. Getting timing, and intonation down. You kinda hafta eyeball ahead of yourself in the text to know where to go with your voice. Its a good exercise for anyone to stand up a read a poem of even prose aloud now and again.

However there is one text that I have read aloud to TRY to better understand it as text and that is: the instruction booklet of the Federal 1040 Income Tax form. But it doesn't work. In fact reading some of the instructions out loud just makes the instructions sound ludicrous and laughable!

A lot of the time when I'm reading and have trouble focusing, I absentmindedly read a couple words out loud.
